Voters across the district in Thursday’s General Election will have boundary changes to deal with as well as a renamed constituency.

A public inquiry was held in 2005 about the changes planned by the Boundary Commission, and the alterations come into affect at this election.

The main changes include the old Bradford North constituency being renamed Bradford East; Little Horton ward has moved from Bradford West to Bradford East; and Manningham ward has moved from Bradford East to Bradford West.

The Little Horton ward was previously split between Bradford’s three constituencies and the boundary changes were also designed to reduce the 5,296-voter disparity between the most densely and sparsely populated constituencies.

In addition, the constituency boundaries were redrawn to reflect wholesale ward boundary changes which were brought in for the 2004 local elections. The Commission wanted to ensure that the city’s 30 new Council wards, were not split between constituencies, as 16 initially crossed boundaries.

At the time, a spokesman for the Boundary Commission, said: “We do not divide wards between constituencies and the proposals will remove these anomalies.

“The changes will balance the constituency electorates and produce an acceptable electoral disparity in the city.”

Bradford Council is aiming to ensure there is no confusion among voters by providing details of both wards and constituencies as well as a map of where the nearest polling station is.

A spokesman said: “The review of the boundaries was carried out by the Boundary Commission following full consultation.

“All electors have been issued with poll cards with both ward and constituency details, including a map of where to vote.”

In addition, the town of Heckmondwike returns to the Batley and Spen constituency this time, after being part of the Dewsbury seat since 1997.

And there have also been some slight changes in the Pudsey and Leeds North West constituencies to match seat boundaries with the Leeds Council wards.
