Glittering Society awards night is held outside of London for the first time

Student programme-makers gathered in Bradford yesterday for the Royal Television Society Awards.

In what is seen as a big draw for Bradford’s City Of Film status, it was the first time the ceremony has been held outside London.

The event, at the National Media Museum, celebrated the cream of student television with a presentation of undergraduate and post-graduate awards for four categories of programme-making; factual, fiction, entertainment and animation.

Hosted by comedian Seann Walsh, the event included presentations from the makers of TV programmes such as Doctor Who, reality show The Only Way Is Essex, crime documentary Making Crime Pay and teen soap Hollyoaks.

Students, including undergraduates from the University of Bradford, attended special masterclasses where they heard from top industry figures and gained an insight into the industry. More than 330 entries for the student awards came in from around the UK.

Judges included former Emmerdale script editor Marianna Abbotts, BAFTA-nominated producer/director Matt Bennett, whose credits include Who Do You Think You Are? and Ross Kemp On Gangs, and producer Sean Hancock, who has worked on Celebrity Big Brother and Strictly Dance Fever.
