LA Without A Map (1998)
As in Billy Liar, a dreaming Bradford undertaker has ambitions to head off to Los Angeles and become a scriptwriter.
Only in Mika Kaurismaki’s movie, which was filmed on location in Bradford’s Undercliffe Cemetery, the dream comes true, thanks to the intervention of a Liz-type American free spirit.
Producer Sarah Daniel summed up Bradford’s peculiar attractiveness. “It’s quite funny how a Finnish director, a Finnish sound man, a French cameraman and a French focus puller have come to Bradford and are hoping that all the cultures will mix in an instant, which is what they have to do… It’s a fantastic city. We’ve had nothing but enormous help from everybody.”
The cast includes David Tennant , Saskia Reeves, Margi Clarke, Anouk Aimee, Johnny Depp and the Leningrad Cowboys.
