IT was a day Girlington Primary School pupil Shahayna Begum will never forget, and neither will her headteacher Kathryn Swales nor her lead teacher for the deaf, Claire Hussain.

The trio were guests at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, at St George’s Chapel, in Windsor on Saturday.

Shahayna, 11, who is profoundly deaf, had been nominated as a worthy guest by school governor Tina Butler.

“It was an absolutely wonderful day. We were all blown away by the occasion,” said Mrs Swales.

“We really couldn’t have been in a better place to see the guests arriving.

“I was concerned at first that Shahayna would not be able to see but we were not crowded at all from our vantage point on the lawn and took loads of photographs.

“She kept saying to us what a lovely time she was having and kept asking when she would be able to see Harry and Meghan.

“Claire and I pointed out some of the celebrities she would know and we gazed at the wonderful outfits. It was a truly amazing experience.

“We were near the side archway where the guests made their entrance so they all came past us.

“We were able to watch the guards marching past and got to see the Queen arrive too. Harry and William walked past too.

“Afterwards Harry and Meghan came past in the carriage.

“It is the sort of occasion you can only dream of attending.

“Shahayna was absolutely exhausted at the end of the day.

“We had to pick her up at 4am to catch the train at 5am and didn’t get back to Bradford until 9pm but I am sure Shahayna will never forget her special invitation.”
