A PRIMARY school is asking Bradford residents to get behind them in their bid to secure funding to turn a piece of waste land into an outdoor learning and community space.

Allerton Primary School is asking people to spare a couple of minutes to vote for them online in an Aviva Community Fund project where they have made an application for cash of between £5,000 and £10,000.

The fund offers the chance to get money for an important cause in the community but there is very little time left to get the votes in and counted.

"Hazel Scott, learning mentor at Allerton Primary School said: "The voting closes at midday on Tuesday, November 21, so we don't have a lot of time.

"Our plan is to turn a piece of waste scrubland near the school into an outdoor learning area, like a forest school project, where children can learn about the outdoors, play and even have lessons in a stimulating and mindful environment.

"It will be a community area which the public can enjoy too so it will be for everyone, really, where they can meet to reinforce cohesion in the area."

She added: "The piece of land has a few mature trees on it already but it is covered in broken glass. People have dumped rubbish there and it will take a lot of clearing.

"If we win the funding we can create a lovely, tidy area which will be an asset to this area and have wild flowers, fruit trees and dens.

"It will be a safe and natural woodland for play and learning," she said.

"What is needed now is votes from everyone. It is very much like an X Factor audition. We need people to vote for us. It doesn't take long to do and each person can have up to 10 votes.

"It really will make a difference because it is a national funding project and we will be up against a lot of schools and community groups.

"The projects with the most votes go before a judging panel and the money is then allocated.

"We are really keen to get this project off the ground but we need the public's help to be in with a chance."

To cast your vote, go to https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/17-3388 and follow the directions.

The winners of the funding will be announced on January 16.
