Army bomb disposal experts have been called to a flat in Ravensthorpe following the discovery of a suspicious package.
A 30-metre police cordon was put up in Northstead after officers were called just after 3pm today.
Occupants of properties nearby have been evacuated from their homes, a police spokesman said.
