A BURST water pipe has sent water flooding down onto a busy main road in Cleckheaton this morning.

Work to repair the road is expected to take "a few days" and the road from Wesley Street, has been closed in both directions to Chain Bar interchange roundabout.

The incident was spotted at around 5am and has caused disruption to motorists amid reports that nearby businesses have been flooded.

Diversions are now in place and part of Bradford Road is closed off as Yorkshire Water workers tackle the "large burst". Some homes and businesses nearby are also without water temporarily.

Passer-by Dale Wain, of DRW Photographics, captured this footage of the flooding, taken at around 7am and again at 8.45am, showing water pouring down Wesley Street on to Bradford Road.

The footage shows vehicles managing to plough through the standing water as well as workers on the scene.

Local councillor Kath Pinnock said she had been in touch with Yorkshire Water first thing and that they confirmed it was down to a burst water pipe.

"Yorkshire Water said it was a major burst. It's at the bottom of Wesley Street, so not on the main road, but the water is pouring down on to Bradford Road.

"People are still managing to get through and hopefully Yorkshire Water will be able to isolate it soon."

Tom Underwood at Yorkshire Water said: "Due to damage caused to Bradford Road by the burst water pipe for safety reasons we have had to close the road from Wesley Street junction to the chain bar interchange roundabout in both directions.

"To manage traffic flow a diversion route has been put in place in agreement with Highways which has been clearly signposted.

"We appreciate this is a busy road and will cause traffic issues and so we hope to repair the burst water pipe and re-open the road as soon as possible.

"As soon as the area has been made safe we will begin road excavations and repairs, but we envisage the road will be closed for the next few days to enable these extensive roadworks to be carried out. Pumps are already in place moving the surface water off Wesley Street."

Details of diversion route given by Yorkshire Water are: Turn off Bradford Lane onto Spen Lane towards Gomersal. Then turn left onto the A651 Bradford Road towards Birkenshaw. Then turn left again onto A58 Whitehall Road West and the diversion ends at the roundabout.
