A PCSO was hospitalised after being punched in the face when responding to a call to a McDonald's restaurant.

The officer was one of a number of police responding to calls of anti social behaviour around the McDonald's on Northgate, Heckmondwike, on Saturday night.

He was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital to be treated for a black eye.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested over the incident, and police have announced increased patrols in the area.

Sergeant David Whiteley of the Batley and Spen NPT, said: “Officers were called to Northgate, Heckmondwike at 8.24pm on Saturday to reports of a number of youths committing anti social behaviour.

“Officers attended and then went to speak to those alleged to have been involved in the incident. As this was happening a PCSO was hit in the face and left with a facial injury. He was taken to hospital.

“Police officers and Police Community Support Officers have been carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to reassure people that anti social behaviour will not be tolerated.”

The 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a PC and attempted damage. He has been released on bail.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "The safety and wellbeing of our customers and employees is a top priority for our restaurant teams. We take antisocial behaviour very seriously and work hard to address any such instances.

"Our restaurant team in Heckmondwike are looking to work with the local police to prevent future incidents. We are also assisting police with their enquiries following the incident which involved the PSCO away from our premises on Saturday evening.”
