KIRKLEES councillors will debate the future of libraries across the district following a 12-week public consultation.

More than 5,000 responses were received about proposals to close all but two of the area's 26 libraries, including Birstall, Cleckheaton (pictured) and Heckmondwike.

Just over half of the respondents agreed the local community should take a more active role in running libraries, but only 18 per cent said they would be willing to volunteer.

Opinions were mixed as to whether moving services into community facilities would be acceptable.

Community-supported libraries - where volunteers help a paid member of staff - received more than double the level of support than community-run libraries.

The issue will be discussed at a full Council meeting on Wednesday, July 29, at 6pm at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Library service cabinet member Councillor Graham Turner said: "The independent consultancy report and the feedback received in the consultation will help me and cabinet colleagues make the decisions on the library service of the future."
