A LEISURE centre serving the Spen Valley could be expanded, if Kirklees councillors agree on the scheme.

The £395,000 project would see extra gym and fitness facilities built at Spenborough Pool in Liversedge.

It is designed to compensate for the loss of the Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre in nearby Cleckheaton, which will close next year under plans to demolish and rebuild Whitcliffe Mount School.

Kirklees Council's cabinet will make a decision on Tuesday, February 24.

A report going before the cabinet says the expansion should absorb "displaced customers" from Whitcliffe Mount, but adds that alternative venues for the sports of roller hockey and roller derby are still to be found.
