Parking row man urged to be friends with neighbour

A Skipton man was urged to make friends with his neighbour after a parking dispute cost him £200.

John Hawkins, 28, stood on his neighbour’s driveway in Consort Street, shouted abuse and threatened to damage his car, Skipton magistrates heard on Friday.

Hawkins’ neighbour, Mark Turner, was standing in his front room, looking out of the window at the time, and telephoned the police.

Hawkins, who admitted using threatening words likely to cause alarm on December 28, lived with his parents in the house they had occupied for 31 years, the court heard.

Mitigating, John Mewie, said there had been ongoing problems with parking in the road and Hawkins often found his car blocked in.

He added that Hawkins had taken a pragmatic view and had admitted shouting at Mr Turner after his anger got the better of him.

Magistrates, who urged Hawkins to make friends with his neighbour, fined him £100 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £15 victims’ surcharge.
