A man attending the funeral and wake of the mother of a friend ended up spending the night in police cells after being arrested for being drunk and disorderly, a court heard.

Adam Feather, 26, was one of several people who had gone to the funeral and to the wake in Cross Hills, near Keighley, in dressing gowns as a mark of respect for the deceased, Skipton magistrates were told.

Police were called to the Cross Hills Social Club in Main Street, Cross Hills, just before 7.30pm on September 28 because Feather had been abusive to staff and was refusing to leave.

He continued to be abusive despite being warned by police, so was arrested and taken into custody where he stayed until early the next morning.

In mitigation, Keith Blackwell said Feather, who admitted disorderly behaviour while being drunk, had nothing on his top half when the police had arrived because he had been in a dressing gown, and not because he had been squaring up to the officers.

"He knew the lady well, she had a habit of always wearing a dressing gown so a lot of people went to the funeral and to the wake in dressing gowns. When the police arrived, he didn't have clothing on the top part of his body, but he wasn't 'squaring up' to police," said Mr Blackwell.

Mr Blackwell added Feather had been very drunk and as soon as he had regained his senses the next day had shown remorse and had apologised to officers.

Feather, of Minnie Street, Keighley, was given a six month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £85 and surcharge of £20.
