SKIPTON MP Julian Smith has taken-up a new role – by royal appointment.

He has succeeded neighbouring Keighley MP Kris Hopkins as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household.

A handover ceremony was held at Buckingham Palace.

The ancient role, which dates back to 1501, includes various duties relating to the organisation of Parliamentary business.

Mr Smith will also have personal responsibility for writing a daily private report to the Queen on proceedings in the Commons.

And as an officer of the royal household, he will accompany the Queen at a number of diplomatic and social events.

"It is an incredible privilege to take on this role and particularly to take over from my colleague and friend Kris Hopkins," said Mr Smith.

Mr Hopkins held the post for 15 months, before being appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office in Theresa May's new Government.

"It was an immense privilege to serve as Her Majesty's Vice-Chamberlain and report on some of the biggest political events we have seen in modern times," said Mr Hopkins.

"I am delighted to be handing the wand of office to my colleague, friend and constituency neighbour.

"Julian is perfect for the role and I know he will fulfil his responsibilities with characteristic dedication and vigour."
