SOUTH Craven people are being urged to "shop" suspected drink-drivers.

The message was issued this week by as an annual campaign targeting those who drive while over the limit was launched in North Yorkshire.

Behind the initiative is the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership, which will hold a series of information roadshows.

In 2013, seven people were killed and 56 seriously injured in collisions across North Yorkshire in which alcohol was a factor – the highest figure for seven years.

Craven-wide, there were two fatalities and five serious injuries.

“Most people do understand that it is wholly unacceptable to get behind the wheel and drive having drunk alcohol but there are still some reckless individuals who persist in carrying out this illegal and dangerous behaviour,”Deputy Chief Constable Tim Madgwick, chairman of the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership“They need to understand the extent of the risks they are taking with other people’s lives as well as their own and should think carefully about the potential consequences of their actions.”

He added: said: “If you know of someone who is drink-driving. I urge you to contact North Yorkshire Police or Crimestoppers immediately.

"That phone call could save a life.”
