A whole century of music was explored by children at Long Preston school to round off their term’s theme of “A Century to Remember”.
The musical evening saw children from reception to Year 6 present instrumental, vocal and dance performances which covered the early 1900s to the 1990s.
The concert included classic wartime soldiers’ songs, a Charleston dance, an assortment of boy bands and girl bands, solo, duet and group performances of music ranging from Puccini to Abba, several film and musical soundtracks, some Beatles, Robbie Williams, a range of folk tunes, and even a recorder piece composed and performed by Year 6 pupils Isobel Birrell and Charlotte Mellin.
Headteacher Elizabeth Martin said: “Music is a really important feature of life at Long Preston School – just as vital to our curricular well-being as academic achievement and sporting success.”
Year 4 pupil Lucy Smith summed up how people felt when she said: “I felt a bit nervous before I played but I really enjoyed it.” Youngsters start preparing for the musical event weeks in advance under the guidance of Class 3 teacher Angela Ward, a trained musician.
