A FEAST of festive events take place this weekend, including street theatre and Christmas markets.

Clayton will be transported back to Victorian times on Saturday for the annual Clayton Dickensian Market.

The 13th annual event, which will run from 11am to 4pm will see hundreds of residents and stall holders take to the streets in period fancy dress to celebrate the festive period, inspired by Dickens’ classic novels.

As well as allowing people to hunt a Christmas bargain, the market also raises money for charities, and this year will be supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the Down Syndrome Training Support Service, the Samantha Sykes Foundation, and Clayton Village Hall.

Elsewhere, Haworth is getting into the festive spirit as the annual Christmas Market takes place in Central Park over the weekend.

There will be more than 30 stalls in the Winter Wonderland, a festive bar and children’s activities from 9am to 5pm.

There will also be live music and street theatre in Main Street, and a crafts fair at the Old School Rooms with a selection of festive gifts.

In Bradford city centre, Festive Streets will be bringing Christmas magic to the public from 12pm to 5pm over the weekend.

More than 20 interactive performers will be dotted around the centre, from City Park to Darley Street, Kirkgate, Bank Street, New Market Place and Hustlergate.

Attractions include eight feet tall snowmen, cuddly Christmas characters, a snow globe gliding through the streets, and many other performers.

There is also a funfair in City Park and Tyrrel Street until Sunday.

Locally-produced Christmas products will also be on sale at the Made Bradford Christmas market which will be in Oastler Square from 10am to 5pm.

At Bradford Cathedral, worshippers can mark the start of advent by attending the Advent Procession on Sunday from 4pm for a service of readings and carols.

In Otley, the annual Victorian Fair will take place from 12pm to 6pm in Otley town centre, and will feature vendors in period dress, street theatre and carol singing.

A number of Christmas light switch-ons are also taking place around the district this weekend.

On Saturday, the lights will be turned on in Burley-in-Wharfedale as part of a Christmas market event which begins in Main Street at 2pm, alongside a crafts fair in Queen’s Hall, with the button being pressed to illuminate the village’s lights at 4.30pm.

In Eccleshill, Bradford, the Christmas lights will be switched on at 5.10pm on Sunday by six-year-old competition winner Niamh Taylor at Eccleshill Recreation Ground.

And in Saltaire, the Christmas lights will be switched on outside Victoria Hall at 7pm, with stalls, refreshments and singing outside the hall from 5pm.

The Met Office is predicting the weekend will be dry but temperatures are not expected to get out of single figures, so people are advised to wrap up warm for the festivities.
