DETECTIVES are appealing for information after masked raiders beat and robbed an assistant at an Otley shop last night.

Three men with their faces covered struck at Cottage Stores in Newall Carr Road, at 8.50pm.

One waiting at the door while the other two entered and threatened Harry Tandeep Singh, 64, who was working behind the till.

They threatened to stab him - though no knife was seen - before climbing over the counter and punching and pushing him to the floor.

They then stole a 'significant amount' of cash from the till, along with a number of bottles of spirits and packets of cigarettes, before running off along Newall Carr Road.

The attack left Mr Singh, shaken with bruises to his face and body.

Today, Detective Sergeant Amanda Wimbles, of Leeds District CID, said: "This was a frightening experience for the shopkeeper to be attacked and robbed in this way.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious in the time leading up to the robbery, or who saw the suspects running off.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who is aware of bottles of spirits or cigarettes being offered for sale in suspicious circumstances that could be linked to this incident."

Cottage Stores' owner, Jaspalinder Singh Srao, said: "I had just gone home and my nephew was running the shop when this happened.

"They beat him up and took the cash from the till and some cigarettes and booze.

"He's all right but is a bit shaken and has some marks on his face.

"I think they had some knives, it was a good job they didn't use them."
