AN UNPOPULAR new one-way system is set to be changed before Christmas.

The existing scheme, which covers Charles Street, Nelson Street and Walkergate, in Otley, has been roundly condemned by most residents and traders since it was introduced last month.

The system has caused long tailbacks at peak times and a petition to have it changed or scrapped has almost 900 signatures.

Now it looks as though the critics have cause to at least partially celebrate.

Leeds City Council is planning to alter the scheme so that the traffic flow on Charles Street and Walkergate – though not Nelson Street – is reversed, and vehicles turning from Bondgate can once again use the roads. Cllr Colin Campbell said: “The current scheme is not working properly and many members of the public who have commented have said they feel it might work better if traffic flows were reversed.”
