ANYONE interested in bell ringing can have a go at Otley's Parish Church next weekend.

All Saints is inviting visitors to try their hand at the art of campanology as part of its Heritage Open Days celebrations.

The church is laying on a number of special events between Friday, September 12 and Sunday, September 14, including bell ringing sessions on Saturday, September 13.

Church warden Margaret Parkin said: "Visitors will be able to visit the ringing chamber in the tower, see the bells close up and learn some of the tricks of the trade from Meg Morton and her team.

"Visitor numbers will be limited at any one time so it would be useful to check in at the church itself on the day.

"If you do have to wait you can enjoy some of the other events, such as a guided tour of the church and stories featuring some of the families whose memorials are in the church.

"There will also be a new presentation telling the stories behind the stained glass windows, and another providing a virtual tour of the bell tower with views over Otley from the top - which is not accessible to visitors."

Information about the servicemen from Otley who died during the World Wars will also be on display, along with the memorial day prayer stations that were produced for the First World War centenary commemorations on August 4.

Archive materials, information sheets, a history trail for adults and a quiz sheet for children will also be available, along with tea and coffee.

The church, Otley's oldest building, will be open from 10am to 4.30pm on the Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4.30pm on the Sunday.
