Empty premises in Market Street in Bradford
A city centre street once described as “booming” is now littered with empty shops and some remaining retailers in the area fear future closure if trade does not pick up.
Some traders on Market Street and its vicinity feel the delay to the Westfield plan and the amount of empty shops is affecting business.
Antonio Barbiero, owner of Pizza Pieces in Market Street, previously told The Telegraph & Argus in May that he might be forced to close his business this month unless construction work began on the Broadway site, from where he was forced to move seven years ago.
He said: “I was going to leave at the beginning of this month but I’ve asked my landlord to give us three more months to give Westfield a chance to start some work. Bradford Council has got to do something about it.
“If Westfield don’t come and put a shopping centre here this city will die slowly. All these empty shops on this street don’t help either it just kills everything else near it.”
As reported in yesterday’s T&A, The Early Learning Centre store on Market Street is closing down as part of the national closures by Mothercare.
Val Summerscales, secretary of Bradford Chamber of Trade, said: “I think Market Street is suffering as much as most with the delay of Westfield shopping centre.”
In nearby Broadway , just one street away from Market Street, DKZ ‘Designer Kidz’ wear is displaying a closing down sale sign.
Meanwhile, George Demetriou, owner of The Acropolis Cafe, on Broadway, which has been trading in Bradford since 1960, also fears closure if trade does not pick up.
The rates of the empty shops, which are set by the national Government, have been highlighted by other shop owners as a contributor to their continued vacancy.
Shafkat Khan, owner of The Fresh Filling Sandwich Bar which opened two weeks ago on Market Street, said business was going well so far, but feels the rates do not help new businesses when they are starting out.
He said: “I have put an appeal in to try and get some relief for being a new business.”
Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, whose portfolio includes employment, skills and culture, said: “The city centre is one of our top priorities; Market Street is a key street in the area. We have the Regional Growth Fund which will help businesses, and we are putting on a lot of events in the City Park which is regenerating trade.
“It is a difficult time to be a retailer but we are doing our best to support them to create the right environment to do business.”

Westfield plan or any other plan will not work unless the issue of illegal markets is solved. The case of Bazaars which should not have been started at the first place is taking so long to close. On what grounds stall type retail markets are being allowed? Would anybody from the council like to explain? Even Olympic games failed to generate any boom in the country how putting a lot of events in the city park can regenerate trade. The only thing which could work is solid legislation to handle ILLEGAL RETAIL MARKETS.
The illegal bazaars probably have a greater impact on those in Bradfords city centre markets who are having to pay rent and rates. Crazy isn't it, the council do little, or nothing, to support legal businesses when they are really in need of some help?

Where is he now commenting on the two stories that immediately followed and what are his views on Westfield actively trying to sell the site.
Also where are his comments on the continued trade of the illegal bazzar?
Do councillors only pass comment on what they see as good news then the head is in the sand for stories like this?

The fact that all the T&A have appeared to do is briefly mention it hidden away in another news item is that they don't believe it's in the publics interest which is why sales of their paper have dropped through the floor.
You can be a propaganda machine for the council or you can be the moith piece of the people and demand answers, at the moment your the councillors puppet avoiding anything controversial that might stop a cosy releationship with City Hall.

They have consistently failed to draw enough tenants to kick start the build, and even failed to sell a 50% share to Meyer Bergman.
It comes as no great surprise that Westfield are now looking to offload the site, simply because they have realised that this project is a dead duck, and will simply walk away after having decimated our city centre!
Westfield bought the site in 2004., six years have elapsed since Broadway was demolished., its now all too little too late, and I expect to see 'Land For Sale' signs appear in due course!

If the owners of the properties, perhaps with support from the council, offer up cheap rents on these properties - it may make it worthwhile for entrepreneurs to take a punt on something. If the council / whoever else is supporting them, they would be able to exercise some control over who took units up too - so it wasn't just phone shops...
Given this is where the main bus stops are, the main route from Forster Square to City Park / St George's Hall / Alhambra - there is scope for this area to be alive at night too.
And then whatever happens if Westfield is built, even better...

I walked across the park a few times this week, it’s primarily students, kids and skateboarders using the space, which is nice to see, but the adults there are simply boozing. Although the area is regularly cleaned there were still cans of foreign lager which reveal what the space is being used for by adults. There were no business people in suits, no trendy professionals with shopping bags.

There are still daily drunks on streets nearby, drinking, arguing, some days the paramedic response vehicle appears to park nearby, I assume to save the hassle of racing down to yet another 999 call as one of the drunks falls unconscious.

I remember when the Old Bank opened, it was great, decent beer, good food, nice people. then the goose opened and it went downhill fast, trying to compete with the cheap prices, which attracted the scum from the Goose.

College kids maybe on a lunchtime who generally aren't spending? When the bad weather starts even they will head indoors.
This puddle was a scandalous waste of money and for the price 34 million all market street could have been brought up to scratch.

If there is a large group drinking overtly this won’t be challenged at all even on the City Park as the police won’t risk escalating a situation where they are outnumbered by drinkers.

Now they knocked the best part of it down and left a gaping hole in the ground for the greatest part of a decade, even if they built Westfield site and opened it full of shops next month, it wouldnt last a year. People are now into the habit of travelling to Leeds to do their shopping.

Some thinly disguised comments about alcohol here. Alcohol isn't cheap and bars have to pay the Government a duty, which makes them less competitive with retailers. The result is fewer bars and less choice. Younger drinkers are less attracted to the City Centre. These are the people who listen to music, buy clothes and fill refreshment bars. Before everyone decides to ban alcoholic consumption they first need to consider where they're going to raise the lost revenue. Alcohol and music is a large chunk of revenue worth in excess of 200 billion pounds. Some of the money raised from alcohol tax goes to Hospitals, Education, Policing and other important services. Reducing the duty on alcohol would generate the city centre, as there would be an increase in turnover. Basic economics.
Let those that have bought alcohol from licensed premises sit outside and enjoy it and drive away the unsociable drunks.
I have to admit that as I don't go into Bradford centre anymore, I would like to but can't because it's crap, I'm commenting on something I don't really know about. But, if what I have read on here over the last months and years is true I won't be tempted to try it again anytime soon.

Streets with many empty units are so common in so many towns and cities these days, so it's not as if it's only an issue in Bradford.

Bradford has moved out of the top 10 worse areas for empty shops now so the situation is improving, and most of the stores that are shutting down are ones that are closing all over the country (Early Learning Centre, Game, Clintons...)

It's a shame that the T&A seems to get so excited when a business closes, but not when one opens.... Where was the positive publicity when the Fresh Filling Sandwich Bar opened??

It could be a lot worse. Market St / Broadway is a small part of the city centre. The Kirkgate Centre has only one unit empty, as does Darley Street, and Forster Sq shopping park doesn't have any.

The difference between Leeds council is they say something and do it. Not Like Bradford Council who say something and then say something else,it just goes on that is why nothing ever gets done in this city.
