Omar Khan, the new owner of Bradford Bulls
Long-awaited salvation was finally secured for stricken Bradford Bulls last night amid threats the club’s administrator would liquidate the famous rugby league club.
Bradford restaurants boss Omar Khan will be officially unveiled as the new club owner during the Super League side’s clash with Hull FC today - but it is understood a deal was only struck after administrators at The P&A Partnership threatened to pull the plug on the financially-crippled side.
Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph & Argus shortly after ownership of the club was transferred last night, Mr Khan spoke of his “excitement and exhaustion” after almost two months of negotiations and revealed his plan to build “the Wembley of the North”.
“I want to create a sports arena. We have been talking about this for a long time but nothing has ever been done. This is our chance to achieve this and I will do this if this is the last thing I do.”
Bulls fan Mr Khan, whose bid has been supported by former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe - now the club's honorary chairman, said he decided to enter the race to save the crisis-torn club from collapse - competing with Bulls’ sporting rivals Bradford Park Avenue and Bradford City - because it is “part of our heritage and we can’t lose that”.
He pledged to invest in the future of the Super League side, put it back on a “solid foundation” and urged the Bradford community to support his vision.
“I believe we can make the Bulls a truly great club at the heart of our community,” he said.
“But I can’t do that alone and need the support of the people of Bradford - fans, businesses, residents. Together, there is nothing we can’t achieve.
“I want the fans and community to be at the heart of this club. That’s my vision. I’m very passionate about Bradford.”
Bradford South Labour MP Mr Sutcliffe said he and Mr Khan were happy to have saved the club from liquidation and looked forward to working with fans and “everyone who cares about sport in Bradford”.
But a Rugby Football League chief last night warned the “hard work starts now” in Bulls’ battle to stay in the top-flight - with its future in the Super League in doubt.
The governing body’s director of licensing and standards Blake Solly, who has been working closely with all parties since news of the Bulls’ financial crisis broke in the Telegraph & Argus on March 27, said: “The future of Bradford Bulls is so vital to the future of the sport – whatever division they are in.
“That was one of the reasons why Super League Europe put forward a bid to purchase the club from the administrator.
“It’s unthinkable that there could be no professional rugby league team in Bradford and the two really strong bids from Bradford Park Avenue and Omar Khan and Gerry Sutcliffe were testament to that.”
However, he said it was “too early to say” if the club would remain in the top-flight next season.
Asked what it would take to enable the side to stay in Super League, Mr Solly replied: “Once the transfer of the ownership is complete, the hard work of retaining the club’s Super League status will begin in earnest.
“The new owners are going to have to put the hard yards in.”
It is understood the majority of rival Super League clubs – including the big four of Wigan, Warrington, St Helens and Leeds – want to see Bulls remain in the top-flight, but it is unclear what price that would come at.
Now Bulls’ new owners are in position, a mini round of licensing is expected to take place within the next ten days where the RFL will consider bids from the leading Championship clubs and Bradford as to who is best suited to being the 14th Super League club.
Much of whether the Bulls’ application is successful will depend on the new owners’ ability take the club forward and counter suggestions that entering administration has given it a competitive advantage.
To offset that, Bulls could forego some of their central distribution, such as television monies, sponsorship funds and revenue from the play-off matches and Grand Finals, over the next two years.
Supporters’ trust Bullbuilder, which has played a vital role in raising cash during the Quest for Survival campaign and has since raised around £20,000 for a staff Hardship Fund, welcomed the long-awaited change of ownership and said it hoped it could work closely with Mr Khan and Mr Sutcliffe.
Spokesman Michael Farren said: “Safeguarding the future of Bradford Bulls was paramount and hopefully the new owners can now take the club forward to ensure we remain in Super League.”
Bulls’ coach Mick Potter, who has been working on a voluntary basis since being made redundant by administrator Brendan Guilfoyle, greeted news of a change of ownership with cautious optimism and said the new era could yet open the door for him to be reinstated as a paid coach.
The Australian has been linked to the vacant New Zealand Warriors’ job, but Mr Sutcliffe stated earlier this week that he hoped Mr Potter would stay at Odsal .
“It looks positive and I would certainly talk to the proposed new owners to see what their plans were for the club before I worry about myself,” he said.
“Their credentials are good as far as business is concerned and understanding politics.
“At the moment, I’m in the dark to a degree as to what’s going to happen and what job roles are going to be allocated to whom in any new set-up.
“Let’s take one step at a time and see what happens.”
Jont administrator Brendan Guilfoyle said: “This is a great achievement for Bradford Bulls, the players, fans and the city of Bradford.
“My main duty as administrator is to get the best return for creditors - and this was the best deal on the table. Omar Khan has also passed the Rugby Football League’s test as being a ‘fit and proper person’ to run a rugby club as well as being a passionate fan of the Bulls.
“I am really pleased that we were able to retain the playing squad without selling off young stars - which in the end was a crucial decision to achieve the sale.
“There are many people to thank in making this deal possible, not least employees, coaches and the interim chief executive who have all been working without pay. But I’m sure they would join me in saying the fans’ support has been outstanding and they have played a major part in this rescue. And through all this the players have won an extraordinary string of matches."

i would also like now to have some investigation in to the running of club by Hood and hios board . where did the money go ?
It's worrying that we have to compete with others now just to stay in suoperleague, Wkey and crusaders didnt have to do that , can any body explain how going in to admin has given us a competative edge ? and why losing central funds will balance that out ? trealistically we have a new owner who has no doubt paid a good figure to off set the previous debts , i cant see how that gives him as a new owner of the club an edge ? losing central funding from the RFL is suely going to damage the start of his tenure and the finances of the club moving forwards

OT was an existing venue that warranted expansion due to a backlog of season ticket demands. Coupled with the financial global success of Man Utd and the Premier League.
The demise of the idea of redevelopment of Odsal has nothing to do with the success of OT.

Many successful cities have healthy rivalries, however mostly between Football sides, whereas unlike Leeds where there is a common bond, Bradford is more akin to Wigan with a far more prosperous football side - current climate pertaining.
I would love for this 'Wembley of the North' however City should remain at VP.
If we could create a bridge like Rhinos and Lidds then the City as a whole will be prosperous.
However, the Rhions play at Headingley, which has comprised the lodge and is attached to the Cricket stadium - something we lack in Bradford is a proper county-standard Ground.
Though Park Avenue is more akin to Headingley and not Odsal.
Perhaps Odsal should incorporate some ideas from Headingley first and if it can incorporate a Residential block / Hotel or allow the Coral stand to become a proper banqueting suite a la Valley Parade has, it could thrive and its first priority should be to attain rude health as a club.
Of course the ethnicity of the new owner won't go without notice and I hope he's more Assam of Hull than Kassam of Oxford.

Please new owners do all you can to ensure that we remain in SL.
Our biggest asset now is our team & the hope it qualifies for the play offs and then makes some progress in the play off tournament .
This will put pressure on the RL to retain us in the SL.
Great news thus far, just now need the old icing on the cake & be granted the chance to stay in the Super League & keep our team & coaching squad together.

Yes there are a lot of african-decent players but how many asian players are there? Both in rugby and football?
Is Football Racist, the BBC documentary showed that. Clarke Carlisle went to an asian youth team, one of the players was captain of the youth team but no professional team will take him on. Clarke said himself that he's never heard of that before, every other non-asian youth team captain has been grabbed by professional teams, the only reason here is because he's asian.
Also how a scout admitted that he was told not to look for asian players at all, nevermind if they were good or not, wasnt even a second thought, it was clearly NO ASIANS.
Now with an ethnic owner, and a muslim owner, they will try to get more asian lads into the sport, they can now demand the team take on more asian players or at least give them a try. As said about asians arent even given a chance right now.
So yes, if the Bulls get more asian players, asians will go to support them and the team, hence more ticket sales and uniform sales.
People keep complaining how asians arent part of the wider community, but why should they when the wider community pushes them away. It's not that they wont join in, it's that the rest dont really want them there.

The demise of the idea of redevelopment of Odsal has nothing to do with the success of OT.
OT got there first in regard to having a large stadium outside the capital. A UEFA 5-star stadium (OT and Wembley are the only ones in a list of 29). In the mid-90s The superdome would have been the biggest stadium outside of London. But with the OT redevelopment, it has since held international football and rugby, grand finals, play-of finals and more.
What exactly would a "wembley of the north" be? The Bulls would use a home venue, what, 20 times a year? Does anyone care enough enough about speedway anymore? Would anyone be bothered about the likes of athletics, even after the Olympics? I doubt it.

The club is making a loss, so you'll need to address that first, then in 12/18 months time, with head above water you can start to dream, until then this club is certainly not fully out of the mire.
Get immediate bums on seats by reintroducing Speedway and Stock Car racing, then you have an additional income to start dreaming!

I have read with great interest, the news in relation to the Bradford Bulls, sadly I am not convinced that Mr. Khans plans are genuine. I suspect that he will turn the situation to his advantage. The stadium rather than becoming a Wembly of the north, we may find is used to host events other than sport...mela...Asian wedding...Asian bazaar...the list goes on ...Mr.khan please be honest and transparent in dealing with this city...we really do not need to be lead up the garden path and kicked in the teeth. We do not as a city want to be ridiculed. If your vision and intentions at honourable, then you will have no hesitation in gathering all those who have been involved with this great club and this city setting up a committee moving forward in the interest of the club and city..
If it generates money for the Bulls who cares?

Although I know your restaurant well, I used the T&As search facility to research your other activities.
Looking back at the archives (oldest first) you've raised money for the victims of the Indian earthquake in 2001, funded kids to enter a kick-boxing competition in Trieste, supported the fund for a minibus for disabled people, worked to rebuild confidence in Bradford after the riots, been vice-chairman of Bradford Asian Business Association, sponsored Paralympic athletes, supported the Pakistan earthquake appeal in 2005... Unfortunately I haven't time to read further at the moment.
If Bulls fans want a better picture of the new owner's character and activities, I suggest starting off with the T&As archive. Mr Khan and the Bulls can count on my support.

I have read with great interest, the news in relation to the Bradford Bulls, sadly I am not convinced that Mr. Khans plans are genuine. I suspect that he will turn the situation to his advantage. Would be a pretty dumb businessman to not utilise Odsal which Hood and Caisley were and for all his later faults, Richmond wasn't all.
