The district’s NHS obesity team is running a new series of adult weight management programmes in Bradford and Airedale.

Across the district, about half of all adults are putting their health at risk by carrying excess weight. Being overweight or obese is linked with a higher risk of developing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as mental health problems, such as low mood and depression.

Matthew Fassihi, of the obesity team at NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds, urged anyone who needed help with managing their weight to call the team and find out more about the programmes.

“Most people are aware that they should eat healthier foods and get a bit more active, but actually making the changes that will lead to a healthier weight can be the most challenging bit,” he said. “Our groups aim to give people the tools to make those healthier choices and provide a supportive environment in which to do so.

“We find that participants really benefit from the support and motivation from other people in the group and gain inspiration from seeing others achieve great results.”

The programme runs at venues across the district and there are female-only and male-only groups, as well as sessions delivered with language support and separate programmes for children and families.

Sessions combine advice and practical sessions on healthy eating, such as portion sizes and food labels, a practical supermarket tour and opportunities to develop healthy cooking skills. Help is also given to enable people to increase their physical activity levels.

Bookings are now being taken for the 12-week Healthy Weight programmes which start in September and October. Call the team on (01274) 202801 to find out more.
