Plea for crime-plagued Bierley snicket to be shut

The cut-through in Bierley that residents want closed The cut-through in Bierley that residents want closed

Residents who live near a crime-plagued alleyway are calling for it to be closed off.

Councillors are being asked to consider a petition signed by 17 people calling for the pedestrian right of way between Warton Avenue and Hopton Avenue, in Bierley , to be removed to stop it from being used as a “congregation” point.

Concerned residents blame vandalism, loitering, thefts, burglaries, drinking, drug-taking and other anti-social behaviour on the alleyway being open.

They also say the link was used for a get away after a recent robbery at a nearby petrol station.

Lead petitioner Kashef Zahoor, 45, of Warton Avenue, said cars had been damaged by youths using the right of way, which he believed also attracted burglars who could use it as a quick escape route.

He said: “They park down at the bottom, use this as a thoroughfare and also at night there’s so many young teenagers drinking, smoking and doing drugs. We feel unsafe.

“So the residents have come together and said ‘it’s been built for us to have a short-cut rather than walk all the way round, and we are of the opinion that rather than have a short-cut we would have it shut and walk around.”

The closure of public rights of way should be the last resort and not the first.

The Police should be encouraged to do their job and deal with the anti social behaviour. That is what they are there for and what you pay them to do.

another sink hole crime ridden estate that needs bulldozing to the ground. why would anyone want to invest in Bradford when so many of the s hit hole estates that encircle Bradford are utterley lawless and feral.

They need to clampdown on the pubs and offlicences that serve alchohol to underage kids and crackdown on the druggies.

The properties in question are vast majority owner occupied, the vermin live in the council houses further into Bierley. Police on the beat would be a start but then thats never going to happen is it? Bet if this was in Manningham or Girlington the local councillor would be up in arms!!

Exactly, moving the problem elsewhere might make things worse.

Sadly, housing estates with alleyways and snickets were constructed in a more peaceful, harmonious era when people used them for the purpose for which they were created ie convenient short routes through estates.
.
With so many urchins and so few police, the very least our community can do is to allow these areas to be closed and the land to be distributed to the neighbouring properties. These people can then enjoy peace and quiet and a little added security at home.
.
Common Councillors be brave, do the right thing and close the alleyway down.

May be ... but may be it'll corner them into a more manageable area for the police to deal with.
.
It sounds like these residents need a break.

Its what comes of living amongst social housing reprobates.
Hundreds of the houses in that estate were brand new social housing just 4 years ago, many of which from the exterior, now reflect the types that live within.

The private sector leasing scheme is about to give owners of empty homes the opportunity to lease their properties for affordable housing to such as Incommunitites for a minimum of five years and access funding to bring their property up to the standard required in the social housing sector.

The Council is now appealing for people with empty homes to apply for the scheme.

Feel sorry for the neighbours who might get landed with Council dregs of the earth, let alone the owner of the house, who might return to see a horse in the garden as per Bierley!

I certainly agree that social housing - (or anti-social as it should be known) is a disaster.

People buy private houses on good estates only to have pondlife inflicted upon them by the policy which states that a percentage of the estate should be build as social houses.

The inhabitants of such houses only ever bring down the area - they never enhance it because they have no idea how to look after property or behave.

The rule is to never, ever buy a property near social housing or on an estate containing a proportion of social housing.

Planning application has been submitted by Gleeson for 31 private houses to be built on the vacant land along Burnham Ave next door to the mortuary.

Hope that potential buyers recall this topic heading because your not very far from it.
Also Burnham Ave is a drag strip most days!

And if the Planning Application were to succeed it could only do so on the proviso that a percentage of those 31 private homes were social housing.

You cannot win in such a situation. You buy your house and maintain it only to see the value drop through the floor as you end up next to or near to dogbreaths in social housing.

Planning say that there is no indication of a social tenant involved and that it is a Gleeson private build, where you can almost bet on some of the wonderous sights that the future homeowners will be seeing but won't realise until they miove in.

Quite a few home owners came unstuck with the previous private build along Burnham Ave, where during the recession the Council purchased a number of the unsold private properties from the builder and turned them into social housing, I bet the home owners were well impressed!

i was born and breed on the estate and it always had it,s problems but when you seen a police man(officer) you made your self scarce. lack of respect and discipline to much human rights and the estate is a breeding ground for social scroungers and it is sad for the few hard working people that live there Hence why i moved Good luck you will need it national service bring it back
