Long-range forecast of more heavy rain forces cancellation
8:37am Thursday 12th July 2012 in Bradford
By Marc Meneaud, Aire Valley Chief Reporter
Crowds at last year's Bingley Show
Bradford district’s largest agricultural show has been cancelled due to heavy rainfall causing “serious health and safety hazards”, its organisers have announced today.
The Bingley Show, which is organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society, was set to take place at Myrtle Park on Saturday, July 21.
In a statement, the society’s chairman, Leslie Gore, said: “We regret to inform you that as a result of the heavy rainfall over the last few weeks, and the Meteorological Office 12 day forecast of further rainfall on the days running up to the show, we have taken the decision to cancel this year’s show after an inspection of Myrtle Park was undertaken.
“It was agreed that due to the saturated ground conditions there would be extreme ground disturbance resulting in serious health and safety hazards for all visitors, horse events, and exhibitors, together with extensive reinstatement of grass areas for an extended period.”

The council put residents last. They have given precedence to the bigger revenue source, so that people from out of town wont get muddy wellies. The Music Live event itself was originally a FREE social event for local residents. The price now alienates most local families from attending, yet we have to put up with the disruption, the noise, the mess and the swarms of drug addled egotists swamping our streets.
Bingley is a rural heartland with farming at the hub of the community. The show is a highlight of the local social calendar and preparations begin months in advance. These local shows should be revered and devotees respected, not swept aside for crude commercial gain. As usual loyal long standing, council tax paying residents placed bottom of the list.Absolutely disgusting decision.

An absolute disgrace of a decision which will put a dampener on residents in an already miserable summer. One must question the real motive.I live next to Myrtle Park and walk my dog there daily.Yes there has been plenty of rain but there is a good covering of grass and the ground has taken it well.River levels have subsided substantially in the last 24 hours. How on earth can you cancel an event for ground conditions 9 days ahead of the event in July, on the basis of long range weather forecasts? I notice the Council have spent money in the park laying a new tarmac road for vehicular access for festival traffic, then rather ironically, using the spare black stuff to fill in flower beds close to the park entrance. Is this what local residents get for their council tax? The truth is the decision has been taken to preserve conditions for the Bingley Live music festival. This event not only costs Bingley tax payers money to host, but now also robs them of a pinnacle in the historic local social calendar. Will the same health and safety concerns be brought into play for the music festival?....or like other festivals such a T In The Park, take place in an absolute mudbath. Doubtless the latter, and residents will be left with a decimated park that will take months to recover from mud, broken glass & litter.Sections of turf have never recovered from last years mass urination. There might be a good covering of grass as you say now but what about when thousands of people have walked all over it ?
Have you seen the pictures from the Yorkshire show ? Can you seriously say that could have gone ahead ?
I hate health & safety rules but reasons this time are probably valid.
It's unfortunate but it's nature, you can't do anything about it.

It would be my first as I was playing Cricket last year and I’m gutted.
BUT with the amount of rain we’ve had and the forecast for the coming days surely it’s right to cancel it?
You’ve also got to think that trucks will be up and down the park BEFORE the event getting everything in place then of course you’ve got the thousands of people attending the event as well.
It’s going to be chaos.
Regarding the comments about BML yes the Friday night was free and I do believe the organisers of the event should be giving some sort of discount for residents of Bingley…but people wanting this event cancelled are you mad?
Think of the amount of money this event is bringing in to the community
Are you wanting this cancelled because it’s bringing the more younger generation in to the area I wonder?

Its local residents like us that have to deal with aftermath of the festival in terms of anti-social behaviour, litter and louts. Bingley Show can hardly expect to be handing out ASBOs to the over 50s.
The council have simply chosen to save the event that generates the most profit for the town. It just so happens the event they have saved is the one that leaves the lasting damage.

As a Bingley resident I am also very sad at the cancellation of this event.

kies and pubs are the main beneficiaries. There is no meaningful impact on local employment or economy. The event costs the local tax payers £100K before policing, so dont kid yourself the festival is good for Bingley.Families enjoy Bingley Show, the same people who cant afford to go to BML. Yet local events are stamped to make provision for money bearing outsiders is my gripe. What else goes on in Bingley through the summer?...lets see how the health and safety pans out at BML to prove my point.God please make it rain so hard!

Both Bingley Show and Bingley Music Live are fantastic for the town, bringing in extra revenue and tourism.
Neither, however are free!
No matter how many good days of weather we have prior to the show, it would not dry out 3 months worth of rain!
Stop moaning and use your common sense. Do you want the park ruined so you can't walk your dogs without wellies?!
And why are people moaning about BML, for 3 days residents (including myself) encounter a little disruption, its not alot, stop being miserable and grumpy. For most we are able to listen to the music others have to pay for. Its not as if its sprung on us 1 day before!!
The council pre-warn us, put out cones and ensure all music finishes by 11.30pm, perfectly acceptable if you ask me.
Bingley does not want to be stuck in the dark ages, with the older generation dictating everything.
Rant over!

The crowds of 'outsiders' (really, your gripe is with people not from Bingley?!) bring a huge amount of revenue to the town, you ask any outlet, independent or multi if they see an increase in their takings - the answer is yes!
I agree the cost is expensive, and yes some kind of discount to residents should be offered. But wishing that it rains so its cancelled is just disgusting. You want to spoil other peoples summer, just because yours has, by something no-one can control!

It is a charity, run by people for no gain. They have no obligation to put the show on, but of course many people including myself are glad they do. They, or some of them have obviously looked at the park, knowing what will be used to set the site up, looked at the time scale, the weather forecast, whatever you may think of that, and made a decision. The fact you lot are unmoved that a local show is cancelled to make way for an event attended mainly by people from other areas, demonstrates you have little pride in Bingley as a community and little understanding of the economics. The fact you overlook the annual cost of staging the event, tells me you either don't pay council tax or simply do not think. Not all local tax payers are festival goers, and I'm sure few festival goers are tax payers. You lot seem more intent on attacking me, than forming a balanced argument to make your point. If anything, your behaviour is tantamount to trolling.I love Bingley.I seldom get on my high horse but this is a point I feel strongly about. There are hundreds of local farmers & traders who rely on the show as a source of income and forging new bonds, all to the benefit of the local economy.BML money is kept mainly within the venue and money leaves the area as businesses come from outwith and are contracted to do events nationwide. The money spent in town goes mainly to pub chains, Co-Op and bookies.Independent traders may make a couple of hundred extra over a weekend, but thats about it.

Sorry Council Cuts.
It seems because you've "been around a while" nobody is allowed to have different views other than yourself.
If you are how old you say you are I pity you. You really need to grow up and start acting your age.
Throwing your dummy out over this is quite frankly pathetic.
If you’ve got a problem with the decision instead of coming on here and hiding behind your keyboard go and have a word the event organisers.
I’m sure they’ll put you straight.
