Thousands of fans of the Great Yorkshire Show have had their hopes drenched after the prestigious event was cancelled following torrential rain.

The plug was pulled by organisers late yesterday because of fears for the safety of visitors and exhibitors.

The decision was announced by show spokeswoman Lady Emma Ingleby following a meeting with the organisers at the showground in Harrogate.

It is only the third time in its history that the show has been cancelled – the others being for the Second World War and an outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Lady Ingleby said the decision to call off the event had been taken “with regret” and was due to mounting concerns over safety around the site, particularly in the car parks.

Tractors had to pull vehicles out of the car park after incessant rain fell throughout most of yesterday.

Lady Emma said the decision was extremely upsetting because of the hard work and preparation that had gone on.

All horse competitions had already been called off.
