"Come and see the Olympic torch in Bradford, Keighley and Ilkley - by bus"

Bradford Council today urged people attending the district’s Olympic Torch Relay later this month to walk or use public transport.

With thousands of spectators expected to welcome the flame on Sunday, June 24, road closures and parking restrictions will be in place in Bradford, Keighley and Ilkley to ease congestion.

Information signs about road closures, restrictions and likely congestion were being placed around the district from today.

Major roads affected in Bradford include Man-chester Road, Prince’s Way, Sunbridge Road, Manning-ham Road, Hamm Strasse, Marlborough Road, Queen’s Road and Keighley Road.

In Keighley, South Street, High Street, North Street, Alice Street, Spring Gardens Lane and Cavendish Street will be closed.

In Ilkley, Skipton Road, Church Street, Leeds Road, Brook Street, New Brook Street and Middleton Avenue will be affected.

Parking restrictions will be in place from 6am on the day and roads will be closed about 30 minutes before the torch arrives.

Celebration events will be held in City Park and Lister Park in Bradford from 1pm while other events are also planned in Ilkley and Keighley.

The flame will arrive in Bradford at about 2.40pm, in Keighley about 3.40pm and in Ilkley about 4.45pm.

Ian Bairstow, Bradford Council’s strategic director for environment and sport, said: “The Torch Relay promises to be a fantastic day for the Bradford district which is enjoyed by thousands of people.

“Given the scale of the event and the likely big crowds, it is important we make everyone aware of the road restrictions and closures.

“We are putting warning signs on the routes affected and I would urge everyone to make themselves aware in advance of how their journeys could be affected.

“We will do everything we can to keep the disruption to a minimum during what promises to be a very memorable day and I thank everyone in advance for their patience.”

Visit Keighley by public transport? What with Police sniffer dogs randomly deployed to persecute and harass harmless cannabis users? FORGET IT.

I would only have to walk about a quarter of a mile to see the torch go past, but as I don't have any interest whatsoever in the olympic games I won't bother.

Surely using public transport is just common sense! We had already decided we'd use public transport - anyone who tries to drive to see the torch would be crazy.

But then public transport into Keighley is really easy and convenient!

Is it true that people followed you round Manningham the other day thinking you were carrying the torch?

Ignoring it is even easier.

Well yes unless you actually want to see the torch!

Judging by some of the 'local hero' torch-bearers in other parts of the country (Will.I.Am, Didier Drogba etc...) can Bradford expect to be represented by some of our famous sons/daughters? David Hasselhoff and Elle McPherson spring to mind...

Hockney could always carry the torch as well... although he'd probably just use it as a massive, ornate cigarette lighter...

Personally, I can't wait for the 24th. If level of apathy of these comments is anything to go by then it could be the first place with no spectators!
Even the people of the Republic of Ireland were out in force for it yesterday.

I'm struggling to raise the required enthusiasm for a sporting 'tradition' (the torch relay from Mt Olympus to the host city) that only came into being when the Nazi party dreamed up the idea as a propaganda tactic for the Berlin games. Check it out... Besides, my arm is still a bit tired from vigorously waving my little flag up and down with gusto last weekend. Well, I had to do something with my spare time whilst the Jubilee was on...

I can't quite work out why out of the 10 torch bearers relaying through Bradford, only 3 are actually from Bradford.

I am not even sure there is a direct bus to Ilkley from Bradford anymore, anyhow, I have a pressing engagement that I have been putting off for ages....my toenail clippings collection needs to be photographed and catalogued and that must take the priority.
