The funeral of a Bradford teenage soldier, killed alongside five other British troops in Afghanistan, will be held with full military honours this month.

Private Christopher Kershaw, 19, of Idle, was killed on March 6 alongside five colleagues when their Warrior armoured vehicle was blown up by an improvised explosive device about 25 miles north of the capital of Helmand province, Lashkar Gah.

Yesterday saw the funeral of Pte Kershaw’s comrade in 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, Corporal Jake Hartley, 20, at Christ Church, New Mill, Holmfirth.

The others who died were Private Anthony Frampton, 20, Private Daniel Wade, 20, and Private Daniel Wilford, 21, all also of 3 Yorks, and Sergeant Nigel Coupe, 33, of 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

Pte Kershaw’s funeral service will take place at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Town Lane, Idle, from 1.30pm on Thursday, May 24.

Donations in his memory will be made for Help for Heroes and The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund.

Pte Kershaw, a former pupil of Hanson School, Swain House, was the youngest of the troops who died in the blast. The force of the Taliban attack last month – the deadliest single attack on British forces in Afghanistan since 2001 – turned the Warrior upside down and blew off its gun turret.

Shortly after his death his parents Monica and Brian Kershaw, and Mr Kershaw’s fiancee Sharon Wood, told the Telegraph & Argus he had wanted to follow his war veteran granddad and two uncles into the Army, despite knowing the dangers.

Hundreds of people packed into the church for Cpl Hartley’s funeral yesterday – including Monica Kershaw – as a horse-drawn hearse arrived with white flowers spelling out “Jake” and “Hero” on either side.

Jake’s mother and stepfather, Nathalie and Mark Taylor, brother Ethan, 12, and uncle and best friend, Luke, also 20, followed the coffin into church.

Earlier, Major Malcolm Birkett, said: “Cpl Hartley was an infantryman to his core – tough, proud, hard-working and honest.

“He used his own qualities to inspire those he led. The battalion has lost a fine soldier and an outstanding leader.”

The funeral of Sgt Coupe took place last week and the funerals of the other three soldiers killed in the explosion will follow in the next month.
