More than 40 Bradford retail jobs have been saved following the sale of stores operated by struggling budget retailer Peacocks’ administrators to Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
The deal includes the outlets at Forster Square retail park, where 13 jobs have been secured, and the Peacocks concession at Morrisons’ Enterprise 5 store at Idle, which employs 28 people. The sale will secure about 6,000 jobs nationally at 388 Peacocks stores.
But a further 3,100 staff have lost their jobs as 224 branches have been closed with immediate effect.
Joint administrators at accountants KPMG completed the sale of the Peacocks brand stores and the Cardiff head office and logistics centre, where there will be 16 redundancies.
Chris Laverty, joint administrator and KPMG restructuring partner, said: “Today’s deal ensures the continued trading of a well-known name on the high street.
“While it is unfortunate that redundancies have been necessary, we are pleased that we have been able to preserve the majority of the business and jobs.
“Like many other retailers, Peacocks suffered from a decline in consumer spending due to the tough economic conditions.”
