3,500 join Bradford dole queue in past year

More than 3,500 people in the Bradford district have joined the dole queue in the last year as the UK’s unemployment rate increased to a 16-year high, it was revealed yesterday.

The number of people in the district claiming jobseekers’ allowance jumped to 19,493 in January, compared to 18,583 the previous month – 5.9 per cent of the working population.

The figures published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed that 3,585 more people were out of work than this time last year.

Bradford Council’s regeneration chief, Councillor David Green, said the rise in unemployment was a “significant issue”.

It means that the percentage of all those of working age across Bradford and receiving benefits is the highest in West Yorkshire and one per cent above the Yorkshire average of 4.9 per cent.

Coun Green said: “Bradford, like every other town and city in the country is suffering from the national and international recession and we have seen unemployment rise nationally as well as locally.

“In Bradford, we have had a number of companies which have had financial difficulties and have left people out of work.

“We are starting from a high unemployment figure, so an increase in the unemployment rate is a significant issue.”

He said the Council would support growth in the private sector so that companies can provide jobs for “disadvantaged groups” such as the long-term unemployed, young people and those with disabilities.

Coun Green said: “We realise that for people who have had employment, it is easier for them to find jobs than for those who have not been employed for a long time or have never worked and we are hoping to tackle this.

“We are also pushing ahead with regeneration and employment schemes, particularly in the city centre and the Aire Valley corridor, because we realise that the council has to support and enable private sector investment.”

Unemployment across the UK jumped by 48,000 in the quarter to December to 2.67 million, the worst figure since the end of 1995. The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance rose by 6,900 in January to 1.6 million, the 11th consecutive monthly increase.

Other data from the Office for National Statistics showed a 22,000 increase in youth unemployment to 1.04 million, which includes 307,000 in full-time education who were looking for work.

I'm sure the 80m per year the park will bring in will create jobs to reverse this trend.

And David Green is doing his usual routine of upon release of a negative figure, fact or statistic, he immediately compares Bradford to other towns and cities locally and nationally so he can show its not that bad as long as its happening somewhere else. Like the parking charges the other day when he compared it to everywhere else - people in bradford couldnt give a monkeys anus how they charge elsewhere, it matters only in context to the situation in Bradford.

It seems that employment is like the regeneration of the city centre. A Downward spiral - people with no money to spare and no shops to spend it in anyway. When will Green and his cohorts enter the world that real Bradfordians inhabit?

Problem is that Bradford's recession has been going on for 8-10 years!!

I can only speak personally but after working for 30 years with not one sick day I lost my job at the end of January 2012. I have already signed on twice and been to the Job Centre 3 times with nothing on offer. It must be even harder to be 21 with a degree and a future and hopes and dreams, not to mention the student loan debt. The economy is on its **** but Bradford has lost thousands of jobs over the last 10 years.

This made me laugh, when I was a teenager I had a job as a Flyper at Albion Mills, folding cloth for the menders then refolding or flyping it to go out to the finishers. I also worked at Gratton as a 'corrie boy' and made boxes for technical instruments for a place at the bottom of Barkerend Road. All hard work and you would get yelled at if you couldnt supply the trained trades with what they needed in time as they lost productivity bonus. All these entry jobs and the trades they supported have gone

We aren't in a recession and haven't been for a few years. It might seem a bit picky, and I have lots of sympathy with those who have been made unemployed, but people who keep moaning about a recession might be the ones to talk us into one. A bit of positive thinking goes a long way but this Green bloke seems to talk about everything as a negative.

Economic growth is so low it is practically non-existent and technically we are in recession:

Exactly. Try telling that to the DWP minions at the Jokecentre when they repeatedly ask, "how's your job search going?", or "what have you done to find work in the past fortnight?"

Cameron is giving away MILLIONS £££s of YOUR money to private companies such as B.E.S.T. , A4e, and Ingeus, to further hassle and persecute the unemployed when there are NO jobs!

People with ongoing health problems are being thrown off the sick and forced on to Jobseekers Alowance (i.e. THE DOLE) when there are NO jobs for them to do.

Yet multi-millionaire parasite and boss of A4e, Emma Harrison, who lives in a vast stately home at taxpayers' expense, has personally been paid over £8 Million for doing NOTHING.

Pack it in Roly, it's the same old rubbish with a different name.

How many Billions did Brown and Blair give away? Illegal wars, selling our gold when the price was rock bottom, spending more than we earned even at a time of record tax receipts. The list goes on and on.

“We are also pushing ahead with regeneration and employment schemes...because we realise that the council has to support and enable private sector investment.”

The so-called "employment schemes" consist of "mandatory work placements", whereby an unemployed person is forced against their will to work for one month for NO PAY or lose their Benefits. They have no rights and cannot join a Union. This gives greed-driven unscrupulous employers carte blanch to exploit the never-ending source of free labour. TESCO are one such company, and I think ASDA too, though Sainsbury's have bowed to Union pressure and are not taking part in this sham.

To Outraged Citizen, of course there are jobs available, just fewer of them with increased competition. You just have to try harder and whinging about A4E (I've had dealings with them professionally and they are rubbish) will not get you back into a job. I was made redundant after 30 years but I still got another job because I put the effort in instead of moaning.

That's convenient! Two clowns who spent us into this situation are "past history" And before you go off on another predictable, boring, rant about banks just remember that the economies with the lowest levels of debt in 2008 are the ones who are riding this one out the best. The others are called Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. Also remember that the one person who had the chance to reform the banks and the FSA was one Mr G Brown.

Pack it in Roly, it's the same old rubbish with a different name. How many Billions did Brown and Blair give away? Illegal wars, selling our gold when the price was rock bottom, spending more than we earned even at a time of record tax receipts. The list goes on and on.
So you are quite happy that this shambolic Tory-led coalition are giving away MILLIONS of taxpayers money to their rich chums whilst simultaneously undermining both the jobs market and workers' rights? and you don't mind that so long as its not Labour doing it? *shakes head in disbelief* WAKE UP YOU'VE BEEN HAD.
Roly: You told me the other day you had a suit bought for you 10 years ago by the dole office and have worn it twice. You obviously don't go to many job interviews even when the economy was booming. No, if millions were being given away I wouldn't be happy. What about the wasted billions of Blair and Brown I mentioned. Have you forgotten them or were they too inconvenient to mention?
Blair and Brown are past history. Focus on the current problem; the Tories. And I haven't worn the suit because I haven't had any interviews, despite fulfilling my job-seeker's obligations and applying for literally hundreds of jobs (I have proof). And it's not a case of "if" they are giving away Millions ££s, THEY BLOOODY WELL ARE!
Past history-present problem
Tell that to the 20,000 people in Bradford currently claiming JSA. If you want to stick your head in the sand, dwell in the past, and come up with pathetic excuse after pathetic excuse as an apologist for this shambles of a government then so be it. There is no point in arguing with someone who is so blinkered and prejudiced that they cannot see the plain truth that is before them.
Roly. The past overspending is what has caused todays problems, don't you understand the link between the two? If you don't lay off the grass for a couple of days and then try thinking about it again.

I said earlier that I have a lot of sympathy with those who are claiming JSA but simply carrying on spending money we don't have isn't an option.

In the socialist republic of utopia I understand money just goes on trees but in 21st century Britain it doesn't.

Then why is Cameron handing out MILLIONS ££s to private companies and already mega-wealthy individuals?

The way out of the 'european' problem is to re-establish the strength of the unions Europe wide but do away with the european union altogether.

It won't affect the likes of super-rich Benefits cheat Emma Harrison though, will it?

It is not "past overspending" that has caused today's problems. It was the American mortage market and unregulated banking. That situation has been made worse by Tory policies. The Tory spending cuts are unnecessary, highly vindictive, and downright negligent. They are using the recession has an excuse to dismantle the State because they are ideologically driven to do so at any cost. The Tories are ruining Britain.

Read my posts Roly. I understand it was the banks but the man who could have regulated them, Brown, didn't. The banks and overspending caused this. Look around Europe right now. Which countries are doing better than the others? Is it the ones who have balanced there books or those that went into a bank induced recession with loads of debts?

Irrespective of who won the last election we all new that cuts were going to be made to balance the books. Even Balls and co have come out and admitted that the last govenrment overspent.

The economy isn't sunk yet but it's been badly damaged by a combination of greedy capitalists, who should have been better regulated and a poor economic strategy set by the government of the day.

Roly, I'm not particularly a tory. Go back and read my posts. The only thing I have commented on is balancing the books. I do it at home and I do it at work. If we don't do it as a nation we end up like Greece and a few others. If thinking that makes me a tory then so be it.

I have never heard so much complete and utter nonsense as he / her spouts.

He/her is a typical example of the type of society that wants everything handed to them on a plate and refuses to get off their backside and contribute like the rest instead blaming governments or whoever else they can think off.

Tell you what Roly. My sister in law is recruiting for a machine cleaner at an engineering plant in Bradford...£6.80 an hour and 30 hours a week mainly nights....had the position open for 8 weeks now on Jobcentre site....3 applicants...yes a whole 3....of them 3 1 turned it down because they "didnt fancy working nights"...you sound like you would fit into this workshy catagory

you on this planet ? get real people have no money to spend - reason people have borrowed too much money and did not allow for anything altering - vat increasing , living costs etc. We will have no growth as long as nothing is done to get people spending, banks can lend all the money in the world to new and existing business but at the end there has to be a consumer buying, they are not so there is a recession fact !

the dwp clowns are a f##''/g joke ! "have you considered re training?" we have 2 or 3 weeks courses availble - yes I'd like to be a doctor , now 3 weeks later I am !
no industry, no jobs, no hope just greedy millionaires it will catch up with them!

Pack it in Roly, it's the same old rubbish with a different name. How many Billions did Brown and Blair give away? Illegal wars, selling our gold when the price was rock bottom, spending more than we earned even at a time of record tax receipts. The list goes on and on.
can anyone think of what other option we have to make rich people richer and poor people poorer, replies please to 10 Downing St- then again better not might be an idea they haven't thought of !!

No, there isn't a job out there for everyone. My jobsearch takes in a 15 mile radius of my postcode and there is nothing out there unless you have a skilled trade or profession.
And you sound like an utter arsehole. I have searched the DWP website database and can find no such vacancy. Post the job ref and I will apply.

There are jobs out there, I admit not a job for everyone but there are still ones out there. The issue I have is not with the people who are actively looking for work (although some may not take work that's "beneath them") At the end of the day every single person could find themselves unemployed and may not have the financial savings to be able to call it a career break! My big problem is with the permanently unemployed who can count their total working weeks on their hands. The same ones who claim every government assistance going housing allowance, tax credit etc etc, complain they don't have enough money to feed their children, but still have enough money to smoke 20 cigs a day and go out drinking, and have the cheek to say that their 3 bedroom house isn't big enough for their 5 children. It is these people that I totally despise, these people who should no longer be given the option to either get a job or do 40hrs a week volunteer work if not they should be given NOTHING!
That way the government could could better help the genuine people out there.

Oh so you "despise" people who qualify to receive certain State Benefits (Housing Benefit, Tax Credits...what else?). Then presumably you will also "despise" people like Emma Harrison, the boss of A4e, who has just received £8.6 Million of YOUR money for doing absolutely nothing? What, I wonder, will Ms. Harrison spend her vast wealth on? Cigs? booze? or perhaps another mansion? or a private jet? Get your priorities right and stop aiming your hatred and criticism (jealousy?) towards the poor and socially disadvantaged. It is the ones at the top who are bleeding us dry, the multi-millionaire parasites and their rich chums in Government.

If you actually read my post you will see that I actually think that people who are genuinely on job seekers etc should actually receive more help than they already get. It is inappropriate to "despise" those who, for whatever reason, have not managed to succeed in life as well as others. People can only claim those Benefits if they qualify. As for "contributing to society", how do Billionaire tax-cheats such as Lord Ashcroft contribute? And don't forget, Benefits are not a gift, they are a RIGHT! The Government/State does owe all of us a living.
Personally, I despise those who blame the ones at the bottom of the pile.

Yes, it is indeed OUR country! Exactly the point. This country did not just become rich via the exploitation of Colonialism, but also upon the backs of the Working Class, like previous generations of my own family who worked hard all their lives doing the most dreadful jobs under often appalling conditions, in between going off to fight in wars for this country, whilst the rich got richer and stole all the land. The Industrial Revolution (i.e. the sole reason cities such as Bradford exist) is over, and that's not our fault, and so now they owe us a living.

You didn't say which shop is offering jobs, how many hours or what rate of pay. Is previous retail experience required? Is a CRB check required? Will it pay enough to warrant signing-off the dole? It must be great to live in such a black and white reality as you seem to do!

Yet multi-millionaire parasite and boss of A4e, Emma Harrison, who lives in a vast stately home at taxpayers' expense, has personally been paid over £8 Million for doing NOTHING. http://watchinga4e.b logspot.com/2012/02/ emma-gets-daily-mail -treatment.html http://www.dailymail .co.uk/news/article- 2099062/Fury-familie s-tsar-gets-8-6m-ONE -YEAR-bulk-comes-tax payer.html http://johnnyvoid.wo rdpress.com/2012/02/ 10/emma-harrison-the -uks-biggest-benefit -cheat/
Two questions for you Roly.

How many user names do you have?

What do you mean?
Roly? Has it not occurred to you dim-wits that there may be more than one dope-smoking leftie in Bradford?
It had to me! Other than the obvious shared interests you clearly are quite different: you both write and 'sound' different for one thing. But you haven't helped the confusion by only now correcting the assumption (by some) have you?
I thought you were Albion! or is that the other username for Thee Voice of Tripe?

Not being a fanatical shopper, I have only been to one store this week, but guess what....there is a advertisement on the door inviting people to apply for jobs with them. Second and unrelated point: Why did Bradford Council send round 3 employees in a refuse removal lorry to distribute leaflets telling when me green bag would be collected. Somebody somewhere in City Hall doesn't get it !
You didn't say which shop is offering jobs, how many hours or what rate of pay. Is previous retail experience required? Is a CRB check required? Will it pay enough to warrant signing-off the dole? It must be great to live in such a black and white reality as you seem to do!

Well that was an amusing read. Just to make things clear, I have only ever posted, and will only ever post as RollandSmoke, so if it hasn't got my name at the top it ain't me. As regards the unemployment, it is being used as a tool to devide the nation in much the same way as immigration was, to deflect peoples anger away from the decision makers in government who have created the problem. Judging by the comments, this stratergy is working very well for them.

Yes, it works well because most people are very selfish, stupid and short-sighted, as is obvious from the majority of comments.

These aren't real apprenticeships, it's all a scam, providing people with 6 months basic level of on-the-job training for a very low wage. How much training do you need to be a bin-man?:
