Billy Connolly St George’s Hall There was no question of the Big Yin walking off early last night. He was enjoying himself as much as his devoted audience.
This is a tour de force. A master class of ribald mockery. From bodily functions to Toblerone bars (and even a link between the two), there’s no subjects that escapes Billy Connolly’s sharp eye and savage wit.
He takes you on a meandering journey of an angry man pricking pomposity wherever he finds it, or perceives it to be. It had the packed house rocking in the aisles with laughter. The sort of laughter which leaves you breathless.
Tears poured from happy eyes, even at the chestnuts that interspersed the more topical stuff. Glaswegian drunks, stink bombs and practical jokes have scorn poured on them as well as Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
Billy’s humour is based on his dissatisfaction with the state of today’s world. There’s a touch of pathos, plenty of belly laughs and some more subtle moments.
And throughout the ‘F’ word, which has all the offensiveness of warm ice cream coming from Billy’s lips. Not for the prudish or squeamish, but very very funny.
On again tonight.
