Bradford postcodes named as burglary hotspots

Bradford postcodes make up three of the top 20 hotspots in the country for claims on household insurance following burglaries and thefts, a survey showed today.

MoneySupermarket.com analysed more than three million home insurance quotes on the site within the last 12 months and came up with the 20 postcode districts most likely to have made claims.

BD10, which includes areas such as Idle, Thackley and Apperley Bridge, ranked at number two, while BD18, incorporating Saltaire, Shipley, Windhill and parts of Wrose, was rated seventh and BD2, including Eccleshill, Fagley and parts of Wrose again, 18th.

Bradford Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Imran Hussain, said burglary was an intrusive, traumatic crime.

“The Community Safety Partnership and the police have been taking concerted action to reduce it,” he said.“Over the last two years burglary in the district is down by around a quarter, which means some 1,000 fewer victims.”

Shipley Councillor Martin Love (Green) said: “It does seem quite extreme. I would really like to see these exact figures because this comes as something as a surprise that we are so high up.”

Councillor Vanda Greenwood, (Lab, Windhill and Wrose) said: “I am surprised that Wrose is included because I did know that burglaries are relatively low in Wrose and have been reduced rather than increasing.”

Why is this news surprising. Obviously the burglars go to better areas than where they live to do their "trade". However, I think it would be nice if another league table was issued showing how many burglars are caught, what punishment is given and what areas do they actually live in. Now that would be news indeed.

Another thing Leeds beat Bradford at. Interesting that areas like Leeds 13 & Bradford 10 both have a diverse mix of desirable and undesirable places.

Nearly half of this top 20 being in West Yorkshire is pretty bad for WYP though! What are they doing so wrong and what are places like Gtr Manchester and Merseyside doing right?

WY Police should hang their heads in Shame. What do they actuially do?
.
I agree, about Ravo, 3 out of the top 10 are easilly accessible from Ravenscliff.
.
But don't forget the scum on Thorpe edge too!
.
Looks like another Excuse for insurers to hike up my insurance.

I was burgled over the weekend. The police were quick to respond and very helpful but they fully admitted there was little chance of them being caught. Unless they are caught in the act or with the stolen goods then it is almost impossible to catch them.
It is extremely rare to find fingerprints at a scene so even previously convicted criminals are difficult to catch. No wonder its so prevalent.
If they are caught though they should be castrated and de-limbed! (that is the most moderate of my suggestions after last weekend)

Someoen in the police should leak details of known offenders. Then we could form a posse and go and teach the scum a lesson.

Worth remembering that this data is for actual claims; the real hot spots are often so costly for insurance that many people can't afford it. As a result, when burglary takes place a claim isn't made. The poorer areas of big cities such as London, Liverpool and Manchester (and Bradford) do have high burglary rates but insurance claims are not made, and don't show up in this sort of survey

What about the worst area's of the city which generally cant afford insurance, and therefore burglary is not reported to insurance company's!

I got stopped by the police on Sunday/Monday 0300 after picking my son up from working in Newcastle. When I asked if they were following me they said ' yes, we have had a report of two people acting suspicioulsy on Harrogate Road' whether this was true or just their 'in' to pull me over I do not care, at least they were being proactive.

They probably checked you numberplate, found you were fully taxed and insured and assumed there was something amiss! After all, it's a rarity round Bradford!

Police are a joke. When I was burgled in the middle of the night, all the plod asked when they turned up was whether or not I was insured, and if I was, what is the problem? Unbelievable attitude. All they're good for is a crime number.

Looks like it. Most sensible people will be looking for property on Thorpe Edge or Ravenscliffe or Buttershaw. They don't seem to have half as much trouble.

I was burgled last June, police came within an hour and said little chance of catching them or recovering goods. They've now arrested and charged someone who was arrested for another crime and admitted mine. unfortunately no goods recovered but a result - 8 months on. Police aren't the problem it's the scum bags who think they have the right to sponge off everyone else!

About 15 years ago BD8 had the highest incidence of burglary in the UK. There was actually a letter pinned up on the notice bored at Toller Lane Police station explaining that statistics don't tell the whole story and saying what they were doing about it, etc.

When my cellar door was kicked-in the Police classed it as "criminal damage" rather than burglary, as they said the cellar didn't constitute a dwelling! Clearly an outrageous attempt to massage the crime figures!

Nonetheless, I still do not have any insurance, just bars on the windows and a baseball bat behind the door....

2 weeks ago I was awoken at 5.00 am on Sunday morning by a burglar alarm from the house across the road. After listening to this horrible din for 30 minutes I rang the Police (999) but they refused to attend and instead suggested I complain to the Council!

Next time I won't bother ringing the Police, what's the point?

Sometimes they do. I was once given the name of the person who had slashed my friend's car tyres, I went round at night and threw a manhole cover through their living room window.

lol....how clear do you want the worst areas of the city, it tells you the worst areas above, Fagley, Idle, Eccleshill, Wrose, Thackley.....
If this survey mentioned Manningham, Great Horton, Girlington or Barkerend, then you would believe this survey to be 100%....sounds a bit like the survey that mentions muslims have a high rate of birth defect, a non muslim is likely to have an abortion when scans show defects whereas a muslim won't, so if you add the abortions due to birth defects to the muslim birth defects then this survey would also have different figures.

WOW! did ya get the manhole cover back, ya know how much that is worth for the metal collectors....say this manhole cover seriously injured someone innocent in the house, bet you not so STRONG to stand around and admit what you done, otherwise you would have gone during the day and knocked on the door and gone in the house and put the manhole cover where you exactly wanted it...lmao

so you laid in bed for 30 mins listening o your neighbour's alarm while their house may have been burgled, what a good citizen. what would you have done if your neighbour had been run down in the street wait 30 minutes for street cleaners to turn up.

Unfortunately its the courts that decide what happens to these low life, 9 times out of ten they get a slap on the wrists and told not to do it again.

I can hardly bear to watch TV programmes like Police Interceptors any more. When you see the resources thrown at chasing suspects (eg 4 or 5 high performance, gas-guzzling cars + an expensive-to-run helicopter) and then hear the punishments handed out by the courts - that's if the CPS even take the cases to court- it makes a mockery of having a so-called justice system.
