Bradford postcodes make up three of the top 20 hotspots in the country for claims on household insurance following burglaries and thefts, a survey showed today.
MoneySupermarket.com analysed more than three million home insurance quotes on the site within the last 12 months and came up with the 20 postcode districts most likely to have made claims.
BD10, which includes areas such as Idle, Thackley and Apperley Bridge, ranked at number two, while BD18, incorporating Saltaire, Shipley, Windhill and parts of Wrose, was rated seventh and BD2, including Eccleshill, Fagley and parts of Wrose again, 18th.
Bradford Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Imran Hussain, said burglary was an intrusive, traumatic crime.
“The Community Safety Partnership and the police have been taking concerted action to reduce it,” he said.“Over the last two years burglary in the district is down by around a quarter, which means some 1,000 fewer victims.”
Shipley Councillor Martin Love (Green) said: “It does seem quite extreme. I would really like to see these exact figures because this comes as something as a surprise that we are so high up.”
Councillor Vanda Greenwood, (Lab, Windhill and Wrose) said: “I am surprised that Wrose is included because I did know that burglaries are relatively low in Wrose and have been reduced rather than increasing.”

As a result, when burglary takes place a claim isn't made. The poorer areas of big cities such as London, Liverpool and Manchester (and Bradford) do have high burglary rates but insurance claims are not made, and don't show up in this sort of survey
Nearly half of this top 20 being in West Yorkshire is pretty bad for WYP though! What are they doing so wrong and what are places like Gtr Manchester and Merseyside doing right?

I got stopped by the police on Sunday/Monday 0300 after picking my son up from working in Newcastle. When I asked if they were following me they said ' yes, we have had a report of two people acting suspicioulsy on Harrogate Road' whether this was true or just their 'in' to pull me over I do not care, at least they were being proactive.

Does this mean an exodus is about to get underway from Apperely Bridge?

Someoen in the police should leak details of known offenders. Then we could form a posse and go and teach the scum a lesson.

What about the worst area's of the city which generally cant afford insurance, and therefore burglary is not reported to insurance company's!

2 weeks ago I was awoken at 5.00 am on Sunday morning by a burglar alarm from the house across the road. After listening to this horrible din for 30 minutes I rang the Police (999) but they refused to attend and instead suggested I complain to the Council!
Next time I won't bother ringing the Police, what's the point?

Why is this news surprising. Obviously the burglars go to better areas than where they live to do their "trade". However, I think it would be nice if another league table was issued showing how many burglars are caught, what punishment is given and what areas do they actually live in. Now that would be news indeed.

When you see the resources thrown at chasing suspects (eg 4 or 5 high performance, gas-guzzling cars + an expensive-to-run helicopter) and then hear the punishments handed out by the courts - that's if the CPS even take the cases to court- it makes a mockery of having a so-called justice system.
