The Lord Mayor of Bradford has joined forces with a humanitarian charity based in the city to organise a fundraising expedition in Pakistan.
Basic Human Rights, based in Sunbridge Road, will take a group on the trek, to raise money for its education projects. The group will visit projects run by the charity and mountains including the base camp of K2, Earth’s second-highest mountain.
Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Naveeda Ikram is also planning to take a group on the expedition, expected to take place next October.
Her group will be raising money for her appeal, which supports the Bradford Marie Curie Hospice.
The expedition will be led by Pakistani mountaineer Nazir Sabir, who recently visited Bradford to talk about his experiences.
Coun Ikram said: “We got the opportunity when Nazir Sabir came to the UK. He gave us a presentation about his experiences and how he achieved what he achieved. A lot of people seemed interested, from all backgrounds, to get involved. We thought it would be a super opportunity to work with Basic Human Rights on this.”
Anjum Tahirkheli, chief executive officer of Basic Human Rights, said the trip was organised “with a viewpoint of bringing communities together” and she hoped it would be something that could be repeated in future years.
Businesses in Bradford have expressed interest in taking part in the trek and organisers are keen to hear from anyone who wants to get involved.
Mrs Tahirkheli said: “It’s the chance of a lifetime for them to go, and such a nice big group of people are going to go.”
Basic Human Rights (BHR) is in the early stages of planning to build a children’s hospital in Pakistan.
It has also been working to support victims of severe flooding in the country in 2010.
Anyone who would like more information can phone BHR on (01274) 301996 or the Lord Mayor’s office on (01274) 434965 after Tuesday, January 3.

It is a human rights group and NONE of the funds raised will go to either the British or Pakistan government.
