Fish and chip fans will get a taste of bygone Bradford tomorrow with the revival of much-loved city institution Mother Hubbard’s.

The business, in Ingleby Road, Girlington, closed in 2006 to the dismay of customers and staff and was re-opened as a buffet and fast food outlet called Raja’s.

A group of new owners has bought the business and has decided to bring back the fish and chip shop, but with a new feel for the New Year.

Speaking on behalf of the group, co-owner Mubasshir Hussain said with the news of the closure of Harry Ramsden’s in Guiseley, fish and chip lovers will welcome the return of Mother Hubbard’s.

He said: “It is a landmark in Bradford. There was uproar when it closed and we thought it is the ideal thing to do with the premises, and ideal with the recent news of Harry Ramsden’s closing. It can only be good news for Bradford.

“We all grew up there, we used to go regularly for fish and chips. We were all upset when it closed.”

Mother Hubbard’s was opened in 1972 by Coronation Street stars Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander who played Stan and Hilda Ogden.

It cost £90,000 to build and the T&A advertising feature writer of the day described it as resembling a “fairytale cottage”. Haddock and chips back then cost just 45p.

When Mother Hubbard’s re-opens tomorrow it will be a 50-seat diner, with other businesses eventually taking up spots in what Mr Hussain described as a mini food court.

“It’s more of a 2012 look,” he said. “The days of wooden chairs, papered walls and flares have long gone. We’ll bring it up to date.”

The business will employ a clutch of staff of the first era of Mother Hubbard’s. Mr Hussain said he has had several e-mails from former workers and customers happy to see it return to Bradford.
