As the villagers of Anatevka huddle together against the biting cold, a little girl in a vibrant red coat moves among them.
Like a flickering flame, she re-appears throughout this haunting show, as Tevye the dairyman loses his daughters to a changing world.
This is a beautiful production by the Bradford Catholic Players.
With a striking wooden set specially built by the society, and impressive special effects, it felt as though we were in the little Russian village a century ago, clinging to Jewish traditions that are, as Tevye says, as shaky as a fiddler on a roof.
The talented cast did the show proud, and David Kirk’s impressive direction brought effective touches to the story, not least the little girl in red (Elizabeth Middlemiss), who gave me goosebumps, the Matchmaker’s cute dog and Tzeitel’s baby.
The show runs at Bradford Alhambra until Saturday.
