More details have been revealed on the line-up of the first Positive Bradford Day, which is now less than one week away.

Visitors to the event will be able to have a go at sizzling samba, energetic zumba and Asian or Chinese dancing after demonstrations from Bradford’s Kala Sangam.

Chefs from China Thai will demonstrate their skills at fruit carving, while a non-stop line-up of music and dance from local bands, folk groups, rappers and street dancers will be held on the stage in Centenary Square next Wednesday.

Developers Westfield will be offering shoppers a preview of what could in store for its Broadway shopping centre, while a food marquee and outdoor kitchen will include examples of international cuisine.

Jane Vincent, who set up Positive Bradford with businessman Saleem Kadar, said: “It’s shaping up to be a fantastic day for local people and visitors to enjoy. Everyone’s welcome to attend, whether they live in the Bradford district or not.

“We especially want Bradford’s critics and sceptics to come along so they can see despite the economic gloom there’s plenty of good of things still happening in Bradford.”

The event will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Naveeda Ikram and will stretch across the city centre.

As part of the celebrations, Colin Burt, chef trainer at Bradford College’s International Food Academy, is aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest ever bhaji, in partnership with award-winning restaurant Prashad.

The current record holder is held by a community group, which weighed in at 84.26kg.

It will be carried through the streets of Bradford on a special ‘bhaji barrow’ after being cooked at the college’s Westbrook building in a cooking vessel created by engineers at the college, along with a special rack, ‘sky hooks’ and handles to lower it in and out of the oil.

Prashad’s Bobby Patel said: “It’s great to see the College has pulled in a fabulous team and we are proud to a part of this amazing feat. Positive Bradford is truly the future and we are privileged to be a part of this fantastic city.”
