A man who sexually assaulted a drunken young woman after masquerading as a taxi driver to get her into his car, has been warned he faces jail.

A jury took less than an hour to find Faisel Yaqoob guilty of the offence at Bradford Crown Court yesterday after a day-and-a-half-long trial.

Remanding him in custody Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said a custodial sentence of “some duration” was inevitable and added: “I need the expert assessment of the probation service to assist me with a determination of whether this man is a danger, for I have formed the clear impression that he masqueraded as a taxi driver who targeted a vulnerable young woman.”

During the trial the jury heard a 19-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was walking home after a night out in Keighley in the early hours of February 21 last year, when Yaqoob pulled up alongside her in his car and asked where she was going.

The victim got into the vehicle, believing him to be a taxi driver, the court was told.

Prosecutor Sarah Johnson said Yaqoob then drove the woman to the Marley Sports Centre in Marland Road, Marley, where he stopped the car and said to her: “Have you ever had sex with a Paki?”, before he sexually assaulted her.

The prosecutor told the jury the teenager, who she said had been “utterly terrified”, had pushed him away and told him to stop but he continued until she managed to get out of the vehicle.

On Thursday the jury was played a recording of a 999 call made by the victim, in which her pleas for help were punctuated by sobs.

“She was very upset and distressed and called police and told them where she was,” the prosecutor had told the court.

Yaqoob, 23, of Toller Lane, Bradford, was refused bail after it was requested by his barrister David McGonigal.

He will be sentenced on Monday, October 3.
