£5.6 million scheme delivers eco-friendly Council homes in stunning development

The most environmentally-friendly homes in the region – and the first Council house project in Bradford for 30 years – were officially unveiled yesterday.

Twelve of the 45 properties at Pavilion Gardens, West Bowling, are the first in Yorkshire to reach the highest level of the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes. Level six of the code means the homes produce zero carbon dioxide emissions.

They feature solar photovoltaic panels, a communal biomass boiler and high levels of insulation designed to make them carbon-neutral and reduce energy bills by an average of £500 a year.

The remaining 33 homes have been built to Level Four and are fitted with solar panels and harvest rainwater.

Bradford Council and the Homes and Communities Agency jointly funded the £5.6 million scheme, which was built by Lovell and is managed by housing organisation Yorkshire Housing.

I don't want to sound negative on a good story, but, why were only 12 houses built to level 6 and not the whole lot?
.
All new homes should be built to the same high standard from here onwards.

We have lived on Fenby for 9 years and and always thought I lived in Dudley Hill/East Bowling. How surprised I was to find I have been relocated. ome on guys get your facts right. Bradford Council and the developers Lovells have rode roughshod over the residents and owners of Fenby and Longfield Drive since this project started. Pity the T&A didn't want to know when we were campaigning to stop this and the council ignored out basic rights to light and privacy!

The primary reason as to why only a few homes have been built to Code 6 standards in the UK thus far is cost. It is just too expensive to implement on-site renewable energy sources and other zero carbon technology into new-builds. Houses built to code 6 standards in other parts of the UK tend to go for about 40-60% more than their low-carbon counterparts. Code level four homes are currently much more realistic to mass-produce.

Another case of if you can't afford you get it all provided - what's the point of striving to earn a good wage? It's the hard way to do life - get on the benefits and or get yourself a low wage job on set hours!

Here we go! Another case of "I look down on him because he is lower class...I am middle class!"
It seems it's not just those on benefits who are to be despised now, but those no-good skivers working in a low wage job too!
Terrible isn't it? The poor really have no right to a roof over their heads...they should all be living in shanty towns.
Do have a pleasant day as you strive away in your well-paid job, and try not to let bitter thoughts about the fortunes of these parasites get you down.
After all this is David Cameron's Britain now, so I'm sure they'll all be getting their come-uppance soon and sleeping in shop doorways where they belong.

The above was in response to birday's comment.
