Pickets on duty as two-day strike starts

Staff at the University of Bradford were today starting a two-day strike over a national pensions row.

It will be the first time in five years that students will be affected by UK-wide action.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are protesting against changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme pension fund.

UCU members were due to be on the picket line outside the entrance to the Richmond Building on Great Horton Road from 8am.

Union officials said they shared students’ frustrations that the employers were refusing to come back to the negotiating table.

The National Union of Students has written to the employers urging them to join UCU for talks and to try to avoid strike action. Bradford is one of 47 English universities where industrial action is taking place.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: “University staff really value their pension rights and have made it clear from the start of this dispute that if the employers were not prepared to negotiate then we would be left with little option but to take strike action.

“Strike action is always a last resort and we have always wanted to meet the employers to avoid widespread disruptions.”

Well what a good example to give to the students. Lets hope nothing kicks off like it did when the student demonstrated in London. And as Old Peculiar quoted "don't mention working weeks or holiday pay and extremely high salaries or good pensions at the end of your working life.YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY!

I think those in the public sector, who get a pension largely funded by those of us in the private sector whos pensions have gone down in value in the last few years, should consider themselves lucky to have got away with it for so long, rather than take strike action.
No pleasing some folk, is there?

If you're talking about school holidays you're mistaken. I have 28 days holiday a year which is exactly the national average.

My friend who works at the University works all the time. When students have finished their exams who do you think is marking them? When A level results come out in the summer - who do you think is linking those to courses? Who do you think is going to make scientific innovations for industry? Who do you think is going to find cures for diseases? Who do you think is going to to find solutions to the environment?
No wonder scientists are leaving to go abroad to Australia, the US, etc when they have the disrespect shown by some of the posters and the government here!
