'Silver surfer' Ivy Bean dies, aged 104

Bradford is being joined across the globe by Twitter fans and celebrities to say a fond farewell to a legend.

Ivy Bean, who became famous for being the world’s oldest ‘tweeter’, died aged 104 in the early hours of yesterday.

Her daughter, Sandra Logan, says everyone who loved her was welcome to come and celebrate her life at her funeral next week at Nab Wood Crematorium.

Mrs Logan said: “Mum loved her flowers in life so it’ll be fitting to receive them as tributes now.

“We’ll make sure they are passed on to give joy to other people who’ll appreciate them just as much as she would have.”

The family will be playing Peter Andre’s sentimental track Unconditional at the service because the singer, who is on holiday in Australia, was Ivy’s number one celebrity fan having met her twice and having regular chats on the phone.

Twitter tributes from the celebrity world including actor Stephen Fry have been tweeted.

Girls Aloud’s tribute said “RIP Our Twitter Grandma from Girls Aloud” and former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott’s read: “An inspiration to tweeters young and old and proof you don’t have to stop learning at 65.”

Ivy, who met Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street last year, had only two rules on Twittering and going on Facebook.

She refused to let it interfere with mealtimes or watching Deal or No Deal on the telly.
