Sir Ken Morrison set to receive Freedom of the City

Bradford’s highest honour looks set to be bestowed on supermarket guru Sir Ken Morrison following a special meeting of Bradford Council next week.

Sir Ken retired as chairman of Bradford-based Morrisons in 2008 after more than 50 years with the firm, which was started by his father William from a Bradford market stall in 1899.

Bradford Council leader, Labour’s Councillor Ian Greenwood, is among the district’s politicians who are keen to see Sir Ken made a freeman of the city.

He said: “I’ve known Ken Morrison for many years. He’s an outstanding Bradfordian and a credit to the city.

“He has always stuck by Bradford, as Morrisons’ HQ is still in Bradford. I think it’s important we recognise his contribution to the city over very many years.”

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Conservative group leader, said: “His links with Bradford are unquestionable. It’s where Morrisons started in the market with a cheese stall. So it’s only fitting we offer this honour.”

A formal vote is required at an extraordinary meeting of the Council to be held in City Hall, Bradford, next Tuesday. If successful, a civic ceremony will be held at a later date, to be conducted by the district’s first citizen, the Lord Mayor.

Sir Ken’s name would join that of author JB Priestley, who was the first to be admitted to the roll of Honorary Freeman of the City in 1973. Since then the Council has added five more names to the list.

Queensbury brass band Black Dyke Band was admitted in 1976 and in 1997 former MP Barbara Castle, was added to the distinguished list. In 2000 artist David Hockney was admitted, followed by former Bradford Bulls coach Brian Noble in 2006.

Most recently the 4th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment was admitted earlier this year.

Sir Ken, who was born in Lister Avenue, Bowling, is now honorary president of the firm which has grown from a family stall to the country’s fourth largest supermarket.

His father’s business included stalls in John Street and Rawson markets in Bradford and in Dewsbury markets.

The first Morrisons in Bradford was opened in the former Victoria Palace cinema in Girlington in 1961 – and now there are 425 stores across the country.

Sir Ken was chairman and managing director from 1956 to 1997. He was awarded the CBE in 1990 and knighted in 2000.

The Freedom of the City is the district’s most prestigious honour and is awarded to men and women of note who have lived or worked in the city.

Why should Bradfrod honour this man he has done nothing for the city ,his claim to fame is that he employed hundreds of desperate people on super low wages to make himself rich.

With the exception of the Parachute Regiment he looks to be as deserving as the others on the list.

Ken, you've really made it now. Forget your millions, the fancy cars and the big house... you have the freedom of the city!

He's probably created more jobs in the city in modern times than anyone else and to his credit resisted the call to move his head office to London. Would you prefer people to remain on benefits pending the revolution of the proletariat? I've seen 'supermarkets' in the old USSR, eastern Europe pre 1989 and North Korea to boot but sadly they couldn't offer the same range of goods as Morrisons! Maybe you should try the DPRK - lots of pretty desperate people there.

Lets be honest Councillor Greenwood the only reason he kept his head office in Bradford is because if he was to move anywhere else in the country he would have to pay higher wages ! the same probably goes for the cost of the new head office buildings as well......

He doesn't get any honour from me. He doesn't deserve any, blimnkered views of 'created jobs', nah mate, he earned off the back of those employeed by his company, and earned well whilst they grafted hard to earn little.
He gives nothing back to the city of any worth and only if it shows him or his family in a good light.
Whilst I am on, does anyone know why the petrol prices at the Girlington and Thornbury stores are consistently cheaper than the Idle/5 Lane Ends Store? Always a penny cheaper on diesel and usually petrol too. I have my thoughts but didn't think 'positive' racism would have been so openly used by a business.

This sounds more of a gripe with capitalism than with the man himself. I am not trying to defend the bloke but do you honestly think Tesco or Asda are any 'better'. My gripe is that he wouldn't inject money into BCFC but thereagain, why should he. Would you in his situation? And if you had a business how would you manage it? Like him or not he managed his business very well and Bradford would have been a lot worse off without the business rates paid by Morrisons.

There are plenty of other businesses in Bradford who don't pay high wages (and, incidentally why/how would a supermarket job justify mega bucks?). Equally there are many companies who don't offer the sort of job security that Morrisons has provided.

I find it fascinating that he inspires such dislike in his home city. Jealousy maybe?

Yes, jealous cos his supermarket outstrips my supermarket, oh no wait, I don't have one I just shop there. I'd be a very bitter person if I were jealous because someone owned or had more than I. Not my style of operation, see 'white envy' for that.
Yet, I think because his family fortune was built through the hardwork of his family and himself and also the people of Bradford over many decades that as one of the high rollers in the country nevermind the city he could have given a lot more back.
I have recently stopped shopping at Morrisons for various reasons, petrol being one and the fact that it is cheaper depending upon which area of the city you live in, as are some instore prices also. Before people whine about loss-leaders etc, I am well aware and I am also well aware of why Morrisons are pricing as they do.
