A Bradford music promoter who had planned to bring acts including Pete Doherty, The Klaxons and the Happy Mondays to the recently-closed Love Apple Cafe is starting a new club night.

Mark Wilson, known as Slim, had started weekly live music and DJ sets, called Rock n Rolla, at the Love Apple, which began with a DJ set by former Stone Roses guitarist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield.

Following the closure of the Love Apple, the Rock n Rolla nights have been moved to Leeds. “It’s a shame but things are hard in club land,” said Slim. “I still think we need to get Bradford’s music scene bouncing again and I want to help the city try to regenerate its night life in the current climate, so I’m launching a new club night.

“It will be under the name Ear Candy and we’re looking to bring in big club brands such as Ministry of Sound, Pacha and Miss Moneypennys. It’s a house night every Saturday playing funky, retro, electro, and uplifting vocal house music. I just think there’s a lack of weekly house music night that appeals to a slightly older crowd.”

The events will be held at the former Livingstones venue, now called Coco and Crystal.

“We’re using the Crystal side of the venue,” said Slim. “I’ve been involved with the club and house scene for 20 years and have a good network of contacts. There are older people still interested in going out clubbing.”

Slim has hosted club nights at Bradford University and the former Maestros nightclub in Manningham, and has worked on some of the country’s biggest club nights, including Gatecrasher and Ministry of Sound, and at Amnesia in Ibiza.

The Ear Candy launch night is on Saturday, June 26, with guest DJ David Dunne from Hed Kandi.
