Thousands flock to Peel Park, Bradford

Tens of thousands of people flocked to Bradford’s Peel Park at the weekend for a celebration of different cultures at the city’s annual Mela event.

Musicians, artists and dancers from across the globe entertained heaving crowds at the park in Undercliffe, which was filled with market stalls, funfair rides, children’s activities and performance stages.

Highlights included the Kawa Musical Circus from Rajasthan in India, which featured comedy, acrobatics and tight-rope walking, and the Mighty Zulu Nation, a cast of dancers and singers from South Africa.

Young members of Shipley theatre company Q20 Theatre modelled colourful handmade costumes used in the Lord Mayor’s Carnival Parade for a vibrant procession around the park.

One of the main attractions for families was The Bio Dome, where a variety of performances and workshops took place to reflect the theme of International Year of Biodiversity.

Almost every corner of the park was filled with the sound of music. Performers included Indian dohl drummers, Keighley singer songwriter Ann Drury, blues band Liquid Cooled and Bombay Baja, one of Europe’s first Indian brass bands.
