Bradford Burns Unit Appeal nearing £100,000 target

With less than three months to go, Bradford City’s Burns Unit Appeal is £62,000 short of the £100,000 target set by joint chairman Mark Lawn last August.

City’s Appeal now stands at an estimated £38,000, of which more than £3,500 has come from the sale of commemorative T-shirts.

Dave Baldwin, City’s director of operations, said: “The objective is that for the last home game against Northampton on Saturday, May 1, as many people as possible will be wearing them.

“I am confident we will do the £100,000. West Yorkshire Fire Service believe they will raise £25,000. We will do £25,000 on the sale of T-shirts.”

In addition, the club is planning three charity matches.

The first is on Sunday, April 25, at Guiseley. A City representative XI will play a combined old boys team made up of former players from Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City. There will also be a four-way mini tournament.

Funds raised will be split between The Burns Unit Appeal and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The second match is on Sunday, May 9, at Valley Parade. A City XI will play a representative team drawn from the Co-op group.

On Saturday, May 15, a Leeds City College XI will play a City XI, kicking off at noon.

The appeal, backed by the Telegraph & Argus, is raising funds to prevent the pioneering burns unit at Bradford University from closure. The unit was set up in the aftermath of the Bradford City Fire Disaster on May 11, 1985, which cost 56 lives.

RE - games. Lets be honest, games against a Co-op team aren't really going to bring many in.

Why not actually try and organise friendly at home to Liverpool? You'd like to think after their own tragedy they and (more likely) their fans would be willing to help another team in need.
.
Big teams play so many money making friendlies on the other side of the world, it would be nice to see them give something back for once.

As someone that has organised a charity dinner event on the 17th April at Valley Parade. I can vouch for how hard it is to generate the interest throughout the local Bradford businesses. When you've got ex-players looking to travel from Oxfordshire, Cumbria and Nottinghamshire to get here, with ex-managers confirming their attendence within days of walking away from the club...yet businesses...virtual
ly nothing!! However we've around 400 people currently attending - so I'm hoping for a major contribution to the appeal.
