Bradford and district hit by more snow

Fresh snow across the district caused hazardous conditions on the roads this morning.

Commuters faced heavy snow as they travelled into Bradford, with roads quickly covering.

The freezing conditions have led to delays and cancellations to bus services in Bradford and the Aire Valley.

And there have already been a number of road traffic accidents, including a car skidding off the road in the Bingley area and a two-vehicle collision near Chain Bar roundabout, Cleckheaton.

Khadim Hussain, from the First bus company in Bradford, said: "We are doing our level best and the bus drivers are doing a tremendous job in really severe conditions.

"The only drawback is that we are just sticking to the main roads. Traffic is building up on all roads because the weather is getting really bad. We will keep services going as long as we can."

Police in Bradford said the main roads were passable with care but added that the side roads were in a bad state.

Officers are still attending all emergency and priority incidents, but warned that they may take a little longer to get to them than normal.

Police coned off a motorway slip road after a collision between a car and a lorry at about 6.15am.

The car ended up on an embankment after going through a crash barrier on the entry slip road to the westbound M62 at junction 26, Chain Bar.

Police coned off the road for more than an hour. Nobody was injured in the incident, although police said the car driver was "understandably shocked" by what had happened.

The motorway is open but motorists are advised to take extreme car.

Leeds Bradford International Airport was closed for an hour and a half this morning but reopened at 7am.

An airport spokesman said: "We are advising people to check in as normal but to expect slight delays.

"To give people an idea of the situation, yesterday we had about 12 delays but only about an hour and a half. We were really pleased with that because a lot of the other airports were closed."

Meanwhile, anyone travelling from Bradford towards Huddersfield is advised that conditions in the Huddersfield area are particularly bad. There are no bus services from Huddersfield to Manchester and most services are sticking to main roads and avoiding untreated minor roads.

People hoping to do a spot of last-minute Christmas shopping are being warned that the 711 bus service from Bradford to the White Rose Centre has been cancelled until further notices.

In the Keighley area, services 704/5, 710 and 715/6 are also cancelled.

First buses in Bradford are only serving major routes.

On the railways, a broken-down train at Guiseley resulted in delays between Ilkley, Leeds and Bradford Forster Square.

Lets put your council tax up £100 to pay for more!

Last night when the heaviest snow fell it would appear they had no gritters,if you are happy with the service being provided over the last week fair enough but i and there will be a lot of people very unsatisfied.

The gritting and clearing in my area has been better this year than for a very long time, I accept that may not be the experience of some and not every road and path can be treated.

To be fair I think they have done a decent job given the conditions.

Bradford covers a vast area and I'm not sure how many gritters they have but they will never be enough when you get snow like this. Like an earlier poster said, would you accept a £100 council tax hike to pay for loads more ?

I know it's not fashionable amongst certain quarters to praise bfd council, but I think they did a good job. I left Baildon at 5.30am to drive to Shelf. Roads were well gritted and it was an easy 25 min journey, no longer than usual. I hope I'm not tempting fate, but I've had no problems all week.

Decent job,try getting around Eccleshill especially the as yet untreated roads and pavements.

An easy and cheap solution (if the council are a bit hard up!!!!) would be for every household to pay an extra couple of quid per year and buy more grit boxes (and keep them stocked of course !!!!!) for side roads and housing estates.
After several requests this week, our grit box has been supplied with grit and from not being able to get cars up the road, it has taken 2 people just 30 mins shovelling grit to clear the road.
If the council supply the boxes and grit then I don't think many people would have a problem with sorting out the residential roads themselves, leaving the grit trucks to keep the main roads clear.

I work for the council on the parks section and around 8-10 lads from Peel Park have been starting in the early hours of the day for over a week now gritting Car Parks in the City Centre for about 6-7 hours non stop, also 4 of the lads are gritting paths/pavements in the centre and main roads. Last Thursday we were called in at 7pm to grit the Car Parks and did not finish till 11pm, we were out again at 5am the following day. We often have to start at 2am to get all the sites ( including 3 large schools, Social Service Offices, NHS Hospital in Eccleshill and Children's Homes ). Also how many people are on the dole in this city??? get the lazy gits out of their warm beds and do some work for a change.

Agree entirely with Steptoe's comments above, each road should be provided with a grit bin. I put in a request to get our road gritted via the Council's website 5 DAYS AGO and I have still never received a reply, and the road has never been gritted. 2 neighbours went to another street which has a grit bin with a wheelbarrow, brought some back and did the road themselves. What exactly do we pay our council tax for?

Nice generalisation there. Not all people 'on the dole' are 'lazy gits'. In fact, the vast majority of them would do amything to have a secure job in the Public Sector with a solid pension

This dole scrounger has not been able to work for two years owing to a smashed and then ampuated leg. I am desperate to get back to work as soon as the medics permit and I am able to find employment (it's a little scarce at the moment).

However, I still obtained my own rock salt and gritted the pavement around my Property whilst balancing one-legged. Not bad for a lazy git!

Gritting the car parks eh ?

Nice to know that they were making sure the revenue earning car parks were clear even if the means of getting to them were not.

I hope people crying out for Tory government nationally will take a look at the actions of this Local group before taking the plunge.

I apologize for what I said, not everybody who on is on the dole is a lazy git. It was mainly towards the foreign people who come over here getting free handouts and free health care who I was talking about.

To be fair if cars can get parked it means less congestion on the roads (ie not abandoned on pavements) and allows not only the council to generate car park revenues to keep our council tax lower but also keeps businesses/offices/l
ocal govt functioning by helping people to get to work.

It is probably more effective in terms of bigger impact to clear the car parks than focusing a team of labourers on a single road. For example you'd probably then have rows over whether resource should be focused on Canal Road v Manchester Road vs Toller Lane for example.

Surely the road clearing job is not for the labourers but the gritter wagons?

For the record I cont believe they have done a bad job with road clearing today and it will probably melt overnight.
Anyway is the record of 'the national group' anything to commend voting for Labour?

You were obviously seriously ill if you are happy with the NHS, that is after all where they excel. My brother in law would not be here were it not for the efforts of BRI's ICU. Different story when he got to Ward 2 (rubbish). Glad you are well Happy Christmas.

Having worked nights all this week I think the roads haven't been too bad, given the sudden snowfall last night. There have still been the ususal numpty drivers who haven.t the sense to drive to the road conditions but that's their funeral (hopefully). As for the comment about the gritter drivers having a sandwich......don't you eat when you're working then?

Last night just before the snow started, a gritter came up our street. That was the third gritter I saw yesterday. As soon as there was a break in the snow the gritter was back again.
Today the gritter has been past at least three times and this is not a bus route.
Granted the next street has not been gritted but it is still possible to get down that street with care, even if going up would be tricky.
There is no way that every street in an area the size of Bradford can be gritted immediately after a snow fall but I think that given the pressure of the job, the gritter drivers and the guys with the wheelbarrows and shovels, all deserve a big 'Thank You'.
The real problem is to get the same sort of dedication out of the faceless numpties on the council.

If you're on the dole and clearing snow, then you're not available for work and thus can't claim the dole.
