Bradford residents urged to recycle as much as possible

Residents are being urged to recycle as much as possible during the festive period as the amount of waste households produce traditionally rises rapidly.

It often increases by 30 per cent, putting extra strain on refuse collection services by Bradford Council.

In addition during the Christmas holiday, some collections will be slightly disrupted, depending on the normal collection day.

For most people this will be unchanged, but for anyone whose waste is due to be collected on Fridays there will be alterations.

Waste normally picked up on Friday, December 25, and Friday, January 1, will now take place on the following Monday – December 28 and January 4, respectively.

For details of kerbside recycling collections over Christmas and the New Year, people should refer to their recycling calendar or the sticker on recycle bins.

The Council’s eight household waste recycling centres are open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. But for those wishing to recycle, there are more than 80 banks situated at supermarkets, pubs and car parks across the district.

Councillor Anne Hawkes-worth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “We know that people can get distracted during a holiday period noted for feasting and presents.

“But we hope they will make a special effort to ensure that the left-over cards, wrapping paper, gift boxes, decorations and other unwanted items are disposed of in as environmentally-friendly way as possible.

“The Council does what it can to provide the opportunities for people to recycle so we would urge residents to be as tight-fisted as Ebenezer Scrooge when it comes to throwing rubbish away to landfill.”
