It was a time when post-war austerity was put aside as hundreds of mill workers packed their buckets and spades for an annual trip to the seaside.
Now their happy memories have been brought back to life in a rarely-seen 1953 film which has gone on show as part of a treasure trove of memories at Shipley College’s annual exhibition.
The Works Trip to Blackpool film includes nostalgic footage of workers at the mill and their families.
Pictures featuring staff and children at the former Salts Grammar in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s will also be on show at the exhibition.
Shipley College librarian Julie Woodward said: “Each year we put on the exhibition when the students go home for the summer holidays and we always get donations of photos and memorabilia and add it to the collection. It is always growing and there is always something new to see.”
The exhibition is made up of material from the Saltaire Archive and pictures and documents held at the Industrial Museum in Eccleshill, Bradford, and the West Yorkshire Archive at Bradford Central Library.
Miss Woodward said: “The Works Trip to Blackpool film came from the Industrial Museum and it has been really great seeing people who have come in and recognised their friends, relatives or even themselves in the film.
“We have some photos to go with the video so that people can put names to the faces.”
The exhibition is open from 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Friday at the Shipley College Resource Centre on Exhibition Road, Saltaire, until Friday, August 14.
