For one mum, this week’s party to mark the second birthday of the ground-breaking Born in Bradford health research project promises to be four times the fun.
For Nicola Esgate has beaten mammoth odds to give birth to two consecutive sets of twins and they will be joining hundreds of other babies and toddlers in the free family event at Lister Park on Thursday, from 11.30am to 2pm.
The birthday celebrations are being staged by BiB in partnership with the Bradford Real Nappy Project and will feature a giant teddy bears’ picnic. The party is open to all families with young children.
Nicola’s first set of twins, identical girls Amber and Rubi, were born three years ago. Just 11 weeks ago, she ‘doubled up’ by giving birth to fraternal twins Romaan and Harris at Bradford Royal Infirmary, the hospital where she works recruiting babies into the BiB project.
“I always wanted to help recruit more babies into the project but never thought I would be contributing to the cohort myself in this way!” said Nicola, who lives at Heaton.
“The event is a great opportunity to meet other mums, dads and children involved in the project as well as some of the doctors and health researchers behind it.”
The event will include face-painting, a bouncy castle, storytelling, giant dominoes and snakes and ladders, and healthcare information.
The Real Nappy Project will show children how to make a nappy for their teddy and there will be a teddy bear parade with prizes for the best-dressed teddy.
Professor John Wright, of the Bradford Institute of Health Research at Bradford Royal Infirmary, said: “The event is designed to celebrate the success of the project to date, and also to thank all those families who have agreed to be part of our cohort.
“It is also a great opportunity to access a range of healthcare, childcare and recycling advice and have some fun at the same time.”
He added: “Nicola’s story is quite remarkable. While we have recruited more than 60 sets of twins into the project, she is the only mum in the project to have given birth to two consecutive sets of twins.”
Free fruit and water will be provided on the day but families are encouraged to join in by bringing their own picnics.
Among the party guests will be the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Naveeda Ikram – a mother of three children herself.
