Pupils are urged to tie a yellow ribbon around their school railings and pledge to wear seatbelts as part of a Bradford Council campaign.

The Yellow Ribbon Day on Thursday aims to show children and young people are serious about the Seat Belt On? campaign which highlights the importance of road safety and hopes to cut the number of deaths on the road.

Children at Lapage Primary school in Bradford Moor will be tying pledges to their railings in a bid to encourage others to support the campaign.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “The Yellow Ribbon Day will help to show motorists that children and young people are serious about driving this message home that everyone should belt up when travelling on the roads.”

Last year, 1,041 drivers and 639 car passengers were killed or injured in Bradford. Thirty-four passengers were children aged four or under and another 76 were aged five to 15. In March the Council’s road safety team put up 200 road-side adverts at sites across the district as well as special signs at children’s centres reminding parents to use the correct car seats.

The launch event also ties in with another event at Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College on Friday, July 10, when fire crews will show how they remove car roofs in accidents.

The Council is working with the Fire Service, NHS Bradford and Airedale, and the Safeguarding Children Board to promote the campaign which is part of a West Yorkshire project.

The road safety team is also visiting primary and secondary schools to get the message across in assemblies.
