'Tie a yellow ribbon day' in Bradford

Pupils are urged to tie a yellow ribbon around their school railings and pledge to wear seatbelts as part of a Bradford Council campaign.

The Yellow Ribbon Day on Thursday aims to show children and young people are serious about the Seat Belt On? campaign which highlights the importance of road safety and hopes to cut the number of deaths on the road.

Children at Lapage Primary school in Bradford Moor will be tying pledges to their railings in a bid to encourage others to support the campaign.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “The Yellow Ribbon Day will help to show motorists that children and young people are serious about driving this message home that everyone should belt up when travelling on the roads.”

Last year, 1,041 drivers and 639 car passengers were killed or injured in Bradford. Thirty-four passengers were children aged four or under and another 76 were aged five to 15. In March the Council’s road safety team put up 200 road-side adverts at sites across the district as well as special signs at children’s centres reminding parents to use the correct car seats.

The launch event also ties in with another event at Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College on Friday, July 10, when fire crews will show how they remove car roofs in accidents.

The Council is working with the Fire Service, NHS Bradford and Airedale, and the Safeguarding Children Board to promote the campaign which is part of a West Yorkshire project.

The road safety team is also visiting primary and secondary schools to get the message across in assemblies.

As it is compulsory to wear seat belts this sort of campaign should not be necessary, but unfortunately it is,only Thursday i saw a young woman driving with two young children stood on the back seat looking out of the rear window, and she was in a rush the way she was driving.

why arent the police doing their job? and stopping these law breaking selfish drivers. yet again the coucil is spending our money on something that people ignore. ie signs on lampost when drivers ignore the speed signs. its a joke!

Some people in Bradford Think they dont have to wear a seatbelt.
I seen loads of cars racing round with the drivers and there mates not wearing seatbelts it getting worse now.
Thyey need to give the people who dont wear them 3 points a time thimight stop them when they get banned.

instead of the council starting a campaign why dont the police just enforce the law ?
what are they going to come up with to try stop people using mobile phones while driving ? free hands free sets to every driver maybe !!!

It's the law, but obviously some people don't think it applies to them. Occasionally, these people come a cropper. I like to think of it has modern-day natural selection.

get a police officer outside every school at home time and you are bound to find at least 20 drivers a day without seat belts !!!!
and no doubt they would find plenty of other offenses during that time

As long as the Police do not enforce even simple traffic regulations this and other offences will occur.

Seat belts, use of mobiles, illegal lights, illegal number plates, no MOT, no tax, no insurance and disregard for parking regulations are the norm in Bradford.

3 high cost cars parked on the double yellow lines outside the Mumtaz last night and a Police car on the opposite side of the road.

Did they get tickets or even a warning? You know the answer to that one.
