Kimberley goes for top despite sickness

It’s Mount Kimba-manjaro ahoy!

Despite crippling foot pain, altitude sickness and fellow climber Chris Moyles playing Right Said Fred records in his tent, Bradford pop star Kimberley Walsh is all set to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro tomorrow night.

Since Sunday, Kimberley has been climbing the African mountain to raise money for this year’s Comic Relief appeal.

She is in a fundraising group with fellow celebs including Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, fellow Girls Aloud bandmate and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole, Take That’s Gary Barlow and Denise Van Outen.

There were fears that Kimberley would have to pull out of the trek after she was diagnosed with a painful foot condition known as Morton’s Neuroma, which inflames the nerves and makes walking difficult.

But that’s been the least of her problems, mum Diane, of Sandy Lane, has revealed following an emotional satellite telephone call from halfway up the Tanzanian peak.

After speaking to her mum and sister Sally, Kimberley – nicknamed Kimba by her bandmates – revealed she has been suffering from altitude sickness.

Diane said: “She’s been looking after Cheryl, who’s been quite bad, and she’s been suffering from it herself.

“But she’s absolutely determined to keep on going, especially now the end’s in sight. They’re hoping to reach the summit sometime tomorrow.”

The team was celebrating yesterday when they heard they had broken the £900,000 barrier as sponsorship pledges pour in, and the total is expected to be well in excess of £1 million.

Yesterday they embarked upon a 250ft climb up the Barranco Wall section of the mountain – one of the most difficult areas. According to the Red Nose Day website Kimberley had a mishap almost immediately: “Ten mins into today’s climb and Kim sees her boot disappear into a mud hole. Just seven hours fifty mins to go.”

Comic Relief cash is used in Africa to give people the chance they deserve – like the child who catches malaria because his mother can’t afford a net to help protect him, or the woman in a violent relationship who has nowhere to turn, until she finds the refuge funded by Red Nose Day cash, say the organisers. Can the T&A please report real news rather than raise the profile of these "celebrities"?

If these overpaid under-talented peopl want to impress me, make a very large donation to a charity (preferably one that they are not a patron to because someone close to them are affected the issue!).

Thats not really the point of it really is it itchybungle? They are not out to impress you, they are out to raise money for very worthy causes.
What difference does it make to you or me if their profiles are raised if the money is going to where it is needed. I have also read your post on the Race for life. I dont see you trying to set up a charity "just for men" - no i think maybe you are one of these people who is quite happy to let other people raise the money, put the effort in, raise the profile of the charities whilst you just slate them. Made any very large (or any)donations to a charity yourself recently?

What awareness are they raising? by climbing a mountain, apart from that it is dangerous

Well, i'm sure if any of you were supported by any of the charities that benefit from this money (near the 1 million mark so i'v heard so far) you wouldnt turn the money down on the principle that it was raised by celebrities climbing a mountain. They are doing something to raise the money, why is it a bad thing that they are using their profile to do it? Celebrities are called in to switch lights on, open shops and hand out awards- this time this effort they are making will change, maybe save someones life. And whether or not they have been affected personally by the issues that the charities support, this is irrelevant! They are doing good- yes they may gain something from it but so what- so do the charities most importantly the causes that the charities support.

But between them they could probably dip their hands in their pockets themselves and come up with an equal amount without really feeling the pinch, don't you think, luvinit?

And yes, I do pay a lot of money - relative to my income - to charities, every single month.

To be honest I would not set up a charity event that is exclusive to anyone that may want to take part.

I am doing all I can to raise publicise Well Walk that is a 7.5 mile walk around Temple Newsam, Leeds, on 26th April. This is in aid of Diabetes UK (which I do not suffer from) that is 75 years old this year.

So, Luvinit, I am not someone that just letting other people doing, I often put my time, money and effort where my mouth is, I just don't expect to become famous for it unlike these "celebrities"!
